Most of the German POWs captured by American force in North Africa and Italy were sent to the US. They were sent to places like Wisconsin, Georgia, Utah and Texas.

They were often used to work on farms. America GI’s who were black resented the fact that because of Jim Crow Laws in the South German POWs who were not deemed to be a security risk could go to movie theaters and restaurants they themselves weren't permitted to enter.

I'm not black, and I agree with them. Why should enemies of the country be given more rights than U.S. citizens?

Grandma’s farm had a German POW crew working there, living in the old chicken coop. This was in rural Elida, Ohio. Ma said they were kept well away from the family. At least for the Krauts, the war was over, they lived, and no Russians...

Jim Crow Laws passed by Democrats.

Younger people may not know that. Always add that.

Similarly, don’t ever refer to just “the KKK”. It’s “Democrat paramilitary group the KKK.” And they terrorized and killed plenty of white Republicans along with blacks.

There’s a famous photo of a German POW eating at a lunch counter in Texas. He and the other diners are smiling. A black WWII vet once told me that Star and Stripes carried that photo and as it circulated among his unit there was some REALLY angry soldiers.
