Willie Brown copes with Alex Padilla being named Kamala Harris' successor in new column

Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown was one of the strongest voices urging Gov. Gavin Newsom to pick a Black woman to succeed Vice President-elect Kamala Harris in the United States Senate.

In the weeks leading up to the appointment, Brown stated in no uncertain terms, "There's no way that Gavin Newsom should allow anyone other than a Black woman to fill the seat of Harris." Of the seat potentially going to a Latino, he wrote, "Why would you replace the only Black woman with somebody other than a Black person? Racial minorities should know they should not try to fill each other's vacancies."

Newsom selected California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to fill the seat on Tuesday, and Brown gave a full reaction in his weekly Chronicle column published Saturday.

"Newsom could have and maybe should have selected a Black woman for the Senate to replace Harris, but it would not have had the same potential political payoff," he writes. "In fact, appointing anyone but Padilla would have hurt Newsom. He would have been seen as passing over a longtime ally for the sake of enhancing his stature among women nationally, especially women of color."

While the closest Brown came to criticizing Newsom was his "could have and maybe should have" line, San Francisco's current mayor London Breed called the appointment "unfortunate" and a "real blow" to African Americans after being asked for her initial reaction to the appointment.

"The sad reality is [Harris] was the only African American woman in the Senate at this time, and when you think about the history of this country and the challenges that exist for African Americans especially ... this is a real blow to the African American community, to African American women, to women in general," Breed said.

Once a black women’s position always a black women’s position, much like once a rats position always a rats position

Not an African-American woman. Her family owned slaves. Get ready to be treated like one.

Nope... she’s not black at all. Kamala Harris is Jamaica-Father & India-Mother.

Kamala was born from 2 non US citizen parents in Oakland, California.

Kamala cannot be vice president, she is not natural born citizen. She did not inherit US citizenship from her parents.

Kamala is an anchor baby, a US citizen by statute... a poser/fraud.

You can't make this stuff up!

Black people are roughly 6% of California's population. Explain the entitlement to 50% of the Senate seats.

Willie Brown is a racist. I think if you replace an idiot in the Senate, it should be with another idiot, regardless of race. Idiots have so few jobs they’re qualified for.

Hell yes! Maybe even with someone actually qualified for the job.

“The job” is to vote the Democrat party line. Anyone can do it.

True enough. Blacks have never had a huge impact on California politics or culture, except in their own neighborhoods. Mexicans, even before the migration over the last few decades have always had a bigger impact, if for no other reason that anything really old in California carries a Spanish name.

Then there’s the dirty little secret that Mexicans and Latinos from points further south really don’t like/love black Americans all that very much. The reverse is also true. They are not allies in any sense and Brown’s saying that “minorities should know they should not try to fill each other’s vacancies” is surprising, since Brown, like him or hate him, is an astute politician.

Maybe he’s getting senile.

There have been other situations in which there was an attempt to impose a rule that, once a black person has held a position or role, it is permanently a black-person gig. Given their decreasing share of the population, I don’t think there’s much chance of a wide acceptance of this.
