History of the Two-Term President: Returning Power to the People

The 2020 election has brought multiple constitutional topics to the forefront of our daily discussions, many of which are rarely discussed today. The reason is because these issues are no less important than they were in 1787. The method by which the U.S. selects its president and the subsequent peaceful transfer of power to which so many have been referring define our nation. It is one of many examples of a larger theme that limits power, which is returned to the people.

The presidency is an excellent place to begin examining this theme. For instance, prior to the passage of the 22nd Amendment, which placed a constitutional prohibition on an individual being elected to more than two terms as president, there were no restraints on how many terms a president could serve. Despite this fact, no American president took a third term except for Franklin D. Roosevelt, the only one to win not just a third, but even a fourth. A trend of returning power prevailed.

The precedent of a president stepping down and giving back this power was set, at least in large part, by the first president of our republic, George Washington. It was not the first time, either. Following the conclusion of the War of Independence, Washington also resigned as commander in chief of the Continental Army. As most historians suggest, the intent was to send a message that the power of the new republic was to lie with civilian authority. Fear of what colonists had felt was a tyrannical government was a prominent factor in multiple decisions made during the Revolutionary Era. Washington's seemingly simple act was truly a grand gesture, foreshadowing future developments.

The best system ever..... but it is now history......forgotten history.

I think that people care more about imagined security than liberty.

We don’t need to know who planned it at this time, only who is COMPLICIT. Retribution against these traitors will lead to the instigators.

CCP

think about it...495 Fed Congressman, 100 Fed senators, 9 SCJ’s, 96 Federal agencies under which there are some 220 departments, 50 state governors and AG’s...1700 some Federal Judges, throw in a few state legislatures...California, Oregon and Washington come to mind.

We’re still under 5000 people.

China has at least 1.3 billion people. The CCP stays in power for decades leveraging the same resources against their own people they have been putting into place in America the last 20 years

Seems a “big project” to us honest patriots. Peanut project for the CCP. Pieca cake. They’re laughing in their sleeves at all of our naivete
