WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans shot down a Democratic bid on Thursday to pass President Donald Trump's longshot, end-of-session demand for $2,000 direct payments to most Americans before signing a long-overdue COVID-19 relief bill.
The made-for-TV clash came as the Democratic-controlled chamber convened for a pro forma session scheduled in anticipation of a smooth Washington landing for the massive, year-end legislative package, which folds together a $1.4 trillion governmentwide spending with the hard-fought COVID-19 package and dozens of unrelated but bipartisan bills.
Thursday's unusual 12-minute House session session instead morphed into unconvincing theater in response to Trump's veto musings about the package, which was negotiated by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Trump's behalf. Rep. Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 House Democrat, sought the unanimous approval of all House members to pass the bill, but GOP leader Kevin McCarthy, who was not present in the nearly-empty chamber, denied his approval and the effort fizzled.

No, it wasn’t.
Pres Trump wanted a stand alone bill for the monies for the Covid-19 Relief for the American Citizens. THEN the Congress and Senate could battle out the other mess.
Pelosi just changed the $600 to $2,000 in the original bill.
That’s why McCarthy didn’t work with it.
I don’t know but if there is but if true, everyone should know about it.

Well RC, think about it. If it was about covid, would it include a $24,000,000 pay raise for Pelosi and her gang and only $600 for you?
Pelosi is willing to let you pay your self 2,ooo but only if she gets to keep the 24 million. Plus of course the 50 million for Pakistani gender studies and millions to count fish in the sea, and millions to grow fish, and, and, and. And money to bail out unions.
I suspect the kickbacks from the unions alone will buy her another mansion.
This bill is 99% pork and 1% covid.

If the bill just had the $600 marked out with a red pen and $2,000 written over it, he was right in stopping passage.
The president’s request was that the bill be revised to eliminate all of the crazy stuff.
It should be that or nothing. Shut the government and the swamp down.
So we should find out exactly how the failed bill was written before we condemn anyone.

McCarthy claimed this was so the House could “challenge the foreign aid funds the president detailed.” But he was really protecting the pork in the bill that was passed.
