Millions of COVID-19 vaccines are sitting unused in U.S. hospitals and elsewhere a week into the massive inoculation campaign, putting the government's target for 20 million vaccinations this month in doubt.
As of Wednesday morning, only 1 million shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine had been given, about one-third of the first shipment sent last week. Over 9.5 million doses of vaccines, including Moderna's, have now been sent to states, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
While hospitals have started giving out Moderna's vaccine, the CDC has not yet reported that data and there may be a lag in reporting shots given of both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.
The slow pace has barely picked up from the first week when 614,000 shots were given although nearly 2.9 million were shipped.
Hospitals said the first COVID-19 vaccinations started slowly last Monday as they navigated preparing the previously frozen shots for use, finding employees to run the vaccination clinics, and ensuring proper social distancing both before and after vaccination. Some said they did only about 100 shots the first day.
They were contending with a COVID-19 surge, as cases around the United States surpassed 18 million with 323,000 deaths.
The Trump administration promised to vaccinate 20 million by the end of the year while providing little funding to achieve the goal.
That's nine days to give out nearly 19 million shots or over 2 million people vaccinated a day including on Christmas Day.
Almost 5.9 million doses of Moderna Inc's vaccine should go out this week and an additional 2 million doses from Pfizer and partner BioNTech.
Two more vaccines may be approved in February from Johnson & Johnson Inc and AstraZeneca Plc.

First of all, this news is typical spew that needs to be written by multiple fidiots. POTUS Trump can never win. WTF is he supposed to do? The man brought the vaccine to the people and he is still crucified as these pathetic government and medical systems have their heads up their ass. I am cynical enough to think they slow walk it out also because they hate Trump.
LIKE THIS COULDN’T HAVE BEEN FORESEEN. The government bureaucrats predictably want to MICROMANAGE the vaccination process to the Nth degree. In addition to going through the states (and THEIR bureaucracy and micro managers) to distribute vaccine doses, the vaccine manufacturers should be given permission to NOW distribute a portion of their vaccine production to the private sector (e.g., CVS, Walmart, Costco Pharmacies) and give them approval to vaccinate those age 75 and over.
LET PRIVATE ENTERPRISE HELP OUT... NOW.
Fact is, most people don’t want the shit.
Most people do want it. The logistics of getting it to them are behind.
Even if most did not want it, they still are nowhere near meeting that threshold.
Emphasis mine. All that should have been in place two months ago, minimum. Have these incompetents ever heard of a trial run?
Agreed.

A Home Depot employee who is also a fireman said that he has received the vaccine. He was aware of two other people, another fireman and a nurse, who have also been vaccinated. He mentioned that they do have to return for a second shot later.
I want every congresscritter and every Federal regulator to get the shot first. If it works, great! If it has serious side effects, it worked for us.
You seemed to be making a very high demand until I finally noticed the definite article. lol...

You’d be surprised. If the vaccines are also released, as “supplemental” channels, through the existing medical pharmacy infrastructure (e.g., the nationwide CVS and Costco pharmacies) and the government sets certain limitations the private market can quite effectively manage the process. For example, if the government starts out saying that over age 74 seniors can get the vaccine the insurance companies and the pharmacies can limit it to those ages initially. They already do similar age range limitation management AND MULTIPLE DOSE MANAGEMENT for other vaccines such as the shingles vaccine and the HPV vaccine. It’s their ROUTINE!
IMHO, each shipment of the vaccines will be rapidly given out and there will be episodic shortages. That’s not unusual for new vaccines where production is ramping up.
The Pfizer shot is the one that has to be kept at -95 degrees,, thawed, diluted and used up within a few hours. I’m sure a lot of the delay the article mentions is due to making sure there are enough people on hand to rapidly give and receive hundreds of shots at a time.
And that’s what I think too. They supplied for everyone but enough people refused that they have considerable leftovers.
West Virginia gave theirs pretty rapidly.
“As of Monday morning, West Virginia had administered 15,135 doses of the 16,575 doses the state has received. The administration rate is 91.3%”
Really. Do tell. When I got my vaccination no ID was required let alone a photo ID. How about when you got yours?
“All that should have been in place two months ago, minimum”
Guess why there was no preparation.
Two words: The. Election.
The Pfizer and Moderna releases announcements in Nov came as a complete surprise.
The other factor; Not everyone wants it. Demand is ok, but not overwhelming.
l8r
I disagree. If the election had not been involved, the announcements would have come even sooner. As soon as the Phase 2 trials were complete, I knew there was at least a 95% chance the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines would be recognized by those working with them as "good to go" by late October. At the very worst, it would not have hurt States and hospitals to start planning and preparations a few weeks early.
Ours is a hospital employee badge. Im not getting another ineffective annual experimental vax. An mrna bax that makes a protien. My molecular education is not that rusty.
