Qualified and able to win are two different things, and things matter.
John Thune’s 2016 run was at the expense of the SD State Constitution which only allows two terms as a Senator. At the time he was probably number three in the Senate or close to it.
A good friend of mine who served nineteen years in the SD Legislature has heard from a good friend of John’s regarding Thune’s vehement dislike for our President. He believes John has poisoned his chances for re-election. I am not so sure, but John is now a pox a far as conservatives are concerned.
In some ways we are a three party State, with the Missouri river separating us to a degree. The Eastern half holds most of the RINO’s and can and usually does outnumber the Conservative Republicans. That fact usually allows them to outvote the Conservatives and push or elevate bad candidates, as in everyone of our delegation. East River also has the majority of Democrats, but that party is ever shrinking, until we give them an excuse like John Thune, to rise up.
The rub comes, when there is a candidate that needs a boost in the polls to reach a win. That is usually a result of the conservative voting block West of the River. That boost made John Thune a Senator, and Kristi Noem a Governor.
John Thune has endorsed Joe Biden, that was the straw that did it. He will have an opponent if he runs, but it will be someone who has a chance small as it might be.
Of interest is the Native American voting block in the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Reservations South and West of the River. They are up to their necks in illegal voting particularly the buying of votes through food and direct payments. It is known and obviously frowned upon but gets ignored just as all the rest of the cheating that our President has discovered going on for decades. The REZ votes reliably Democrat, and has the same ability to swing elections as the West River Conservative Republicans do.
Any statewide election can be won or lost West of the river.
While literally Pooping on the people who elected his sorry rear end. Worst vote ever. The entire SD DEE CEE delegation is worthy of a sinking ship. One has a chance for redemption, the other two in two years either won’t run or will have a primary.

Thanks for your efforts. Those are the ones that count. Inundate them with calls and try to be civil.
Remember, Thune was himself the victim of election fraud in the election preceding his coming to the Senate. He wants Trump to concede like he did without a whimper.
A fact perhaps not widely known, but John knows which makes it even more curious why he has become the swamp creature from the black lagoon and is pooping on his late supporters.
He has at least a dozen more opportunities to wield the sword of evil against the President of these United States. Maybe even more than that.

Most people outside that region are unlikely to understand the breakdown, the ‘three party’ effect to it all.
I see there is an Inconvenient Truth of voter fraud via Native American reservations. I’ll bet nobody wants to talk about it at all. That means both major parties have work to do.
Republicans in the Senate so quickly forget.
Nope their greed for all the pork bills with all the kickbacks have greater importance to them.
What about their house rep-dusty? Can’t imagine a challenge but f Thune takes himself out? A waste of skin.
Fellow South Dakotan here.....Your post was dead on. Another problem is the SD GOP. I can’t imagine the pressure (from the national GOP) that they would get by having someone primary Thune. I would love to see it happen but doubt that it will. I called Thune’s office on Tuesday and spoke to one of his staffers, and then commented at the end that I would never vote for Thune again. And today I basically said the same thing in an email after I said my piece about the monstrosity of a stimulus bill that he voted in favor of. He is McConnell’s boy. Bought and paid for.
Any Republican that isn’t solidly America First needs to be primaried and defeated. We need to mobilize behind America First candidates at every level of government with our time ad treasure. The Vichy Republicans have to go. We missed the opportunity to remove Ben Sasse from the senate this election, let’s not make the mistake with any others in the future.
If Sarah’s not in she’s a Vichy. 40 congressmen quitting didn’t help. Doing the same to the Senate will hurt more-those seats are gone for 6 years. Toomey’s seat is gone. Just remember the Buckley rule.
There are Conservatives West River that recognize what John Thune has done to himself, and the positions he has taken during the DJ Trump presidency that place him at odds with Republican values much less those of True Conservatives and even less with stated South Dakota values.
That recognition, and the barely two years remaining before he runs again or abandons his position should be all the impetus needed to generate action toward a candidate with backbone and principles that will not be lost in Dee Cee should said candidate win an election.
Displacing an incumbent is a nearly an impossible task but in this case the attempt needs to be made. Same with Dusty. He’s a RINO of the first order, and the fact he is electable tells you what we are up against as far as general South Dakota voters are concerned.
I would hope Mike Rounds is another story, but at the moment he is just another non supporter of Donald J. Trump as President. I like Mike, and maybe the effort to remove John and Dusty if successful, could stiffen his spine and recognition that Conservatives are tired of the status quo.
I am not sure you knew that Dusty had a primary this year. The person who ran against him is now in the State Legislature for the second time fourth term. Covid had a great deal to do with the results. This may turn out to be a very interesting Session of the State Legislature. There is a very strong Conservative group in leadership, who wish to bring some sanity to the profligate spending by the free spending Republicans.
Sanity in Government is also a nearly impossible goal. Even in so called Conservative South Dakota. In the past our Legislature has been in my opinion almost a mirror of what is taking place in the Congress of the United States.
So, all that said, on which side of the river do you reside?
I agree with everything you posted. Very, very difficult to unseat an incumbent like Thune, but the effort must start.

Btw.......I did NOT vote for Dusty or Rounds, meaning I skipped those races and did not vote for anyone. I will NEVER vote for someone who in not a conservative and there were none in either race.
