An IDF Navy submarine crossed the Suez Canal last week as a direct message to Iran, Kan News reported Monday evening.
Arab intelligence officials reportedly confirmed to Kan News that the Israeli submarine crossed the canal toward Iran visibly above water, in an act meant as a message to Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
The move was made during a more than usually tense time between Jerusalem and Tehran. It was made possible after receiving an approval from Egyptian authorities.
According to Arab intelligence that confirmed the reports, the submarine passed the Red Sea and was making its way toward the Persian Gulf, in what they believe was meant as a direct threat to Iran.
The tension between Israel and Iran has increased dramatically following the assassination of Iran's top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh on November 27. Shortly after the assassination, Iran vowed revenge on Israel, which it believes is behind the assassination. Israel, in turn, responded by raising the level of alertness in its diplomatic delegations abroad.

Why the Jerusalem Post relied on a KAN News (Israeli PBS) report from Arab intelligence ... to report on Israeli military moves ...
The mind boggles!
“The Israeli submarine crossed the canal toward Iran visibly above water,....” Of course it was above water, the Suez Canal is not deep enough for it to pass through it (rather than across it) submerged. The implication to me in this article is that Egypt allowed the submarine to go through the Suez Canal and Red Sea rather than denying it passage and requiring it to sail around Africa. And that the Saudi’s have, apparently, NOT raised any objections to an Israeli sub off its coast.
I really doubt they would be willing to transit the Suez canal while submerged. (Channel depth 40’; submarine height 31’6” So with 4’ of water over the top of the sail, there would be 4.5’ of water under the bottom. Add in drifting sand and turbulence from passing ships....)
Transited, not crossed. Crossing is lateral. Like from one shore to another. Transiting means you entered the canal and came out the other end.
Going east to west or west to east?
Bingo. Egypt gave them permission. Trump effect.
I’ve got $100 the sub ports in UAE, donated to FR. Any takers?
I put up a $100 donation to Free Republic that the sub stays out quite a while - but does NOT port in UAE.
While I have lost track of which ME countries are which branch of Islam, I just don’t see the UAE inviting a sharp stick in the eye from Iran.
OTOH, exactly where they resupply will be interesting ...
Both GreenFriar and Salvavida hit on an important point - Egypt and the Saudis both must have known in advance and approved of the mission.
I am sure that Israeli subs have left the Mediterranean Sea. With a base in Eilat there is not much need for the Canal, once Germany delivers their subs to them.
Why now? I think that the Trump effect is at full strength.
Texas,
I know that you posted the original article, but what I noted regarding the unsaid political significance jumped out at me. And I wonder, actually hope, that a peace treaty will be signed between Israel and Saudi Arabia before Jan 20, 2021.
And this is all due to our President taking a move that the entrenched bureaucrats at the State Dept have intentionally avoided since Jimmy Carter managed to get Egypt to agree to a peace treaty with Israel.
You are correct about the Israeli base in Eilat being a home port for Israel subs, but traveling via Suez is weeks shorter than going via Capetown.

Hi.
Transversed the Suez under Egyptian safe passage.
Hehehe.

Island of Dr. Moreau. It’s real.
Anchors away, Israel!

Jpost is leftist garbage masquerading as middle of the road.
Nope. The canal is 24 meters deep(about 78 feet).

UAE was the first Islamic country to establish diplomatic ties with Israel. Bahrain was #2.

FYI, people: 20% enriched U-235 is sufficient to create a bomb that will ignite an uncontrolled chain reaction, if the right bomb geometry is used and if you are willing to accept a larger bomb that may be delivered by train or ship, instead of a missile or aircraft!
