It goes back to the 1930s and the Walter Duranty coverage of the Ukraine famine by the Times. They covered for Stalin’s mass murder.

The Times... suckered again by a made-up story, this time on their podcast operation. Seems to happen to The Times with regularity. Ha ha.
Have you seen the New York Times podcast about Swalwell and his Chinese Communist cohort?
