The French Laundry reportedly received more than $2.4 million through the Paycheck Protection Program while smaller, less-renowned restaurants struggled to get approval at all from the federal program designed to help small businesses during the coronavirus pandemic, an ABC7 News analysis showed.
The more than $2.4 million given to the French Laundry was 17 times more than what the average Bay Area restaurant received from the PPP, according to ABC7.
This is just the latest example of how the bulk of PPP funds have gone to larger companies, while smaller mom-and-pop establishments struggled to get any federal assistance at all.
This isn't the first time the French Laundry has been in the news recently for the wrong reasons.
Last month, Califorrnia Gov. Gavin Newsom was caught dining there for a birthday party in violation of the state's guidelines, and just one day later, San Francisco Mayor London Breed did the same.
Although Breed technically didn't violate the state's or city's coronavirus guidelines, she admitted that attending a birthday party at the French Laundry broke "the spirit" of the rules.

There should be a detailed audit for anyone getting over $100,000
Gotta subsidise the politicians’ favorite fancy dives, lest they have to make their staff cook or order out. How droll, they’d say...

The targeted destruction of the middle class continues. Ruling elites are “raising the drawbridge” to isolate themselves from the masses. Then they’re going to kill the masses thru their policies because the masses serve no purpose to the elites. In fact, the masses are an annoyance to elites.
A restaurant called The French Laundry? I bet you can get crap made out of tofu there.(?)
Big Government like Big Corporations and Big Corporations like Big Government. This is why small business have difficult in obtaining Government assistance. There is massive paperwork which normal require accounts and lawyers to complete, this means additional time and money which are in short supply for small business. Also Big Corporations can use their relationships such as a customer who is also the Governor of a State to give a signal to the Bureaucrats.
Also don’t discount the advance having Big Government eliminate competition for the Big Corporations who turn into the Big contributors for the politician. Remember Willie Sutton summed it up....” I Rob Banks Because That’s Where the Money Is”.
They say it is the #1 restaurant in all of North America.
This is a fact of nature. The big fish eat the smaller fish. I remember when I lived in a large city, it would snow and the main streets would get salted and then plowed, and then the mid-sized streets would get plowed; but the small streets where the working class lived got plowed last, days later, if ever—yet these were the people who had to struggle to get to work.
Not surprising that they got more money. Larger operations employ more people and it is the Payroll Protection Plan after all.
They also have and can afford more professional help to navigate the bureaucracy and secure the loans. This part sucks but it seems inevitable.
factoid: The French Laundry’s executive chef, Thomas Keller, was the consultant for the food portrayed in the Disney/Pixar film, ‘Ratatouille’.
How was he able to get 17 times the amount of PPP money that an average restaurateur could get? he’s probably ‘in’ with the rich and elite in California government.
A disgrace to his profession, say I.
Our government is corrupt. Worship your elected officials or suffer.
I’ve honestly never heard of it. I guess that means I cant afford it and that is more than ok with me. The seating doesnt even look comfortable.
22 people were at that dinner, mainly lobbyists. The meal was over $300 per person. They had a $12,000 bar tab. Taxpayers paid for it all.
