People always buy more food around Christmas. If the shops have plenty of food why do shoppers need to only buy a usual amount of food and not as much as they want?

Also, I’ve read that Flour, stored properly, can last up to a year. Approximately 2 bags of flour to 1 bag of sugar will accommodate cooking & baking needs for a couple of months at minimum.
