Generally, SCOTUS hears appeals from Circuit Courts of Appeal. And Circuit Courts of Appeal hear appears from District Courts.

To take a case right to SCOTUS, (and bypass District Courts and Circuit Courts) you have to invoke its original jurisdiction. But there are very, very few lawsuits where SCOTUS has original jurisdiction.

In disputes between states, SCOTUS has original jurisdiction.
