Rep. Omar, 'Squad' members have a to-do list for Biden

WASHINGTON - Progressive lawmakers in the "Squad" want to see President-Elect Joe Biden use executive actions to cancel student loan debt, raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour for federal contractors, declare climate change a national emergency and more.

Biden will likely have a tough time passing major legislation, even if Democrats win next month's Georgia runoffs and narrowly retake the Senate, so liberals are urging him to make use of the power of the office without involving Congress.

"We've all seen what it’s like trying to get meaningful legislation past Republicans in the Senate," Rep. Ilhan Omar told NBC News. "We know that there is a lot that can be done at the executive level."

Omar, who has met with Biden transition officials and said she was "quite happy" to find them receptive to her ideas, submitted a list of potential executive actions that include some proposed by others on the left, such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

They also want to see Biden reinstate "Temporary Protected Status" for immigrants. They want the federal government to beef up anti-monopoly enforcement and to use compulsory licensing authority to lower drug prices.

They are pushing Biden to put in place tougher Covid-19 workplace protections through the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA). And they want him to declare climate change a national emergency and create an Office of Climate Mobilization to coordinate a government-wide response.

A petition calling for the actions is supported by Omar, Tlaib and Bowman, along with progressive groups Data for Progress, Justice Democrats, the Sunrise Movement, the Working Families Party and others.

There's widespread consensus among Democrats that Biden will have to use executive actions to advance his agenda, and he's already vowed to undo Trump administration actions on his first day in office.

Oh boy, and it will be fun to watch when they (likely) will not get each and every last thing that they demand.

Cancelling or reducing student loans is futile. It just encourages universities to raise prices even faster than they do now. What happens in two years when you have a new batch of “distressed” students with debt? Cancel again? After that what do you do? Keep cancelling?

Those who we depended on and trusted have deserted us. They chose to play with the devil. If we lose trump we have lost our leader and Im sure many will say all bets are off.

Guess we’ll have to go back to depending on ourselves...

I don’t understand what reaction the government can expect if Biden is installed in January; any contract between the government and the citizens would be irreparably damaged forever. The government knows there is little we can do about it; they’ve made it clear they are replacing the American population with a more compliant foreign population with no use for the Constitution.

Carville nailed it. “Stroke of the pen, law of the land”.

See the Dim’s are finally adopting conservative small govt. principles of downsizing government.

We don’t need any stinkin Congress.

Old Biden looks like a corpse - and he may very well be one, if not close to it!

I’m with Rush on this one: Succession is coming closer and closer. We have nothing in common with the opposition and I don’t want to live anywhere around them, let alone under their Communist ideals.

I don’t think Omar and her squad are going to have as much influence as they think they will with Biden - although Trump will be proved right when he said during the debate, “They’ll run all over you, Joe.”

The people of Omar’s district who re-elected her are obviously as crazed as she.

The “squad” can want what it wants. At his age Biden is going to be a one-term president so he can tell the “squad” to eff off.

Now if Biden doesn’t last through his term and we get a President Harris that’s a whole other kettle of fish.

What happens when a class action lawsuit says Biden has to pay back all those of us who paid for our own schooling costs?
