MINNEAPOLIS - The Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved a budget early Thursday that will shift about $8 million from the police department toward violence prevention and other programs - but will keep the mayor’s targeted staffing levels for sworn officers intact, averting a possible veto.
Mayor Jacob Frey, who had threatened to veto the entire budget if the council went ahead with its plan to cap police staffing, said the vote was a defining moment for the city, which has experienced soaring crime rates amid calls to defund the police since the May 25 death of George Floyd.
“We all share a deep and abiding reverence for the role our local government plays in service of the people of our city,” Frey said. “And today, there are good reasons to be optimistic about the future in Minneapolis.”
More than 300 Minneapolis residents signed up to speak about the proposal Wednesday, with some pleading for City Council members to deliver the reforms they promised after Floyd’s death, and others warning it would be irresponsible to cut officers.
Some in favor of the plan called police officers cowards, gang members, white supremacists or terrorists. They spoke about violence that African Americans and other minorities have experienced at the hands of police. Those against the plan said the City Council was acting irresponsibly and has bungled its attempts to bring change. They cited increasing violence, saying they don’t feel safe.
“The place I grew up this summer burned,” said Will Roberts, who grew up in the Longfellow neighborhood. “And it burned because of police misconduct.”
Loraine Teel, of south Minneapolis, said she supported the mayor’s position, telling council members: “You cannot achieve reform without a plan that includes the cooperation of those being reformed ... You have failed miserably.”

So, how do you keep the same number of officers on, with less money?
“Prevent violence”
I’m all ears on how they plan to do this.
Targeted levels.
Snort.
That department is down hundreds of officers with more leaving.
They don’t have to vote to cut. Attrition will be allowed to do their dirty work for them.
Some places have less violence because nobody lives there anymore. Camden NJ saw a dynamic like this; spooky place now.
Cut their pay, silly! They won’t mind.
I doubt a single cop lit a single fire.
Hire stupid people to be police officers who will do the work because the job gives them a power rush.
And a chance to get paid off the books
It was just weeks ago we read this city was asking surrounding counties to prove police assistance because they didn’t have enough manpower to protect their citizens.
Here in NJ many of the people in these areas aren’t even citizens - or taxpayers. The surrounding American areas don’t provide police assistance; they contain the problem.
That should finalize that last nail in the coffin quite nicely! I could easily say they deserve it because of their voting habits. Not sure about that anymore though.
That means-officers will be risking their lives EVERY DAY for even LESS money
Crime is way up in Minneapolis and moving money from police to touchy-freely liberal programs won’t help. Unsafe to visit that city.
And I doubt a single cop stepped in to stop those who were setting the fires.
Extra benefits and a cut, as well as a good reason to oppress local businesses for not being accommodating.
Eventually “local businesses” means liquor stores and convenience stores - all operated by India’s merchant caste. They were the ones targeted by Michael Brown - the same ones who prominently display “EBT accepted here”.
Cutting regularly scheduled appropriations... replacement ballistic vests, riot gear, replacement weapons, duty/training ammunition, training/new hire academy quotas, replacements vehicles/maintenance, administrative supplies, uniform allowances, cancelation of support contracts (janitorial, facilities maintenance), reduction of benefits and insurances...etc. Then finally, attrition will do the rest and those positions will be nullified.
Easy solution: De-police African-American and other "minority" areas.
Let them have their wish.
Any calls for police can be directed to the local BLM office.
Small town police departments in Northern California and rural areas of Oregon and Washington must be flooded with applications from officers from Minneapolis.
Colin Flaherty says these towns’ police departments are full of former officers from Philly, NY City, Washington DC, Baltimore and Miami.
