Smell loss (anosmia) is a common symptom of COVID-19...44% to 77% of people with COVID-19 lose their sense of smell. But many are unaware they have lost their sense of smell until they actively try to smell something that should have an odor, like scented candles. This is why we are encouraging people to actively try to smell something each day. Sudden unexplained anosmia is a specific symptom of COVID-19. It can be used as a daily DIY screening tool by individuals, providing another tool in the fight to contain COVID-19.
Unexplained anosmia is normally quite rare with other viral infections, especially in the absence of congestion or nasal blockage. If someone loses their sense of smell that is a good sign of a possible COVID-19 infection. In fact, recent analyses suggest that if you had to pick just one symptom, sudden smell loss may be the single best predictor of a COVID-19 diagnosis.
...not everyone with SARS-CoV-2 reports smell loss. Critically, being able to smell things does not mean you are COVID-free. If you were able to smell your coffee this morning, that is an ambiguous result: It might mean you don’t have COVID-19, but it could also mean that you are infected with SARS-CoV-2 and simply didn’t lose your normal sense of smell.
Penn State University launched the “Stop. Smell. Be well.” project to raise awareness of the connection between sudden smell loss and COVID-19.
Smell checks cannot and will not catch every undiagnosed infection, since an estimated quarter to half of COVID-19 patients do not lose their sense of smell. But given that DIY smell tests can be done at zero cost, the downsides of using them for screening are minimal.

I usually start with a smell test in the bathroom after arising each morning. There are the pleasant Dial soap, Head & Shoulders, Crest toothpaste and Edge Shaving Gel smells, but there are other assorted bathroom smells as well.

...Looks like Biden was WAY ahead of his time...

Biden is so good at the "Stop. Smell. Be well." test that he created his own brand of PPE for it...
I’ve been recommending that for months. Get a scented candle, sniff it daily. Works, trust me.
But no, everyone wants some paid “medical” test instead.
Just follow some of the guys at work into the restroom. You’ll find out if your sense of smell is working real quick!
Hey, can I get a courtesy flush here!
Cool! Now I can fart in the middle of Walmart and claim it was a medical test!

With cold/flu anosmia, typically you have nasal blockage, the loss is gradual and partial, and the sense of taste is at least partially intact. With COVID-19, you commonly see unblocked noses that smell nothing and a completely total lack of taste (e.g. unable to tell whether something is bitter or sweet).

With covid it’s different - the sense of taste goes, too.

Colds don’t exist anymore... /s :)
I lost mine in an accident when I was 20.
Guess I’m doomed.
You made me spook my dog.

If people go by just what we see here, that’s a good point. They really need to bite into something hot-saucy or sweet tasty, like a dab of BBQ sauce or a spoonful of rich cheesecake.
The smell/taste check is actually something I’ve done every day since this thing hit the US,
These are nonspecific findings and not as effective as a PCR. While there is plenty of room to argue that PCR is set at far too many cycles and therefore finds viral loads insufficient to be virulent PCR is virtually 100% specific.
These tests are marginally sensitive. It is not the burning fire to dx covid.
Again people who do not understand the science should not offer medical advice....
Or any other cause of death.

You mean to imply it wasn’t before now?
Besides, you should have mastered crafting the SBDs by the time you reached adulthood.
We have a cat box...we do NOT have ‘COVID’... :-)

You tell a doctor you’ve suddenly experienced a total loss of smell and taste out of the blue and if he doesn’t suspect covid, then get a new doctor.

“Up to 80% of people who test positive for COVID-19 have subjective complaints of smell or taste loss. That percentage rises when these patients are tested using objective methods that measure smell function. Most patients first notice problems with their sense of smell, but because smell is necessary to taste flavor, the symptoms are often connected.”
“A recent study based on retrospective data showed that patients who had normal smell function in COVID-19 appeared to have a worse disease course and were more likely to be hospitalized and placed on a ventilator. This suggests patients who experience smell dysfunction may have a milder infection or disease. The data we have so far also suggest that in a substantial percentage of the COVID-19-infected population, smell loss can be one of the first — or only — signs of disease. It may precede symptoms that are more commonly associated with COVID-19, such as cough and fever. It has even been proposed that smell and taste loss could be a screening tool since these symptoms appear so early.”
“While smell and taste loss can be caused by other conditions, it warrants a conversation with your physician to determine whether you should be tested for COVID-19. We know smell loss is one of the first — and sometimes only — symptoms in up to 25% of people diagnosed with COVID-19. It could be unrelated, but it’s important to seek care, especially if these symptoms are prolonged.”

What chemicals are in your scented candle?
Be SAFE, smell your armpit instead.

NOT the same thing.
