Billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a Leave campaigner in the run-up to the 2016 Brexit referendum, has confirmed a new 4x4 vehicle will be built in France.

It ends hopes his Grenadier off-roader, based on the original Land Rover, would be made at a new plant in Wales.

Those plans were put on hold in July while Mr Ratcliffe's Ineos Automotive negotiated buying Mercedes-Benz's Hambach site, in Moselle.

He said on Tuesday that Hambach offered a "unique opportunity".

Hambach offered a "unique opportunity".

How did you get so rich! Your new French plant will continue to pay the workers if the truck fails. Mercedes found a sucker to buy their unwanted plant.

Goodyear has been trying to restructure or close its plant in northern France for five years, saying it's too expensive to make tires there in the face of a shrinking European market. It wants to move production to China, where the tires can be made more cheaply and will be closer to booming markets.

Workers' protests, government concerns and the Byzantine layoff process in France have held up the factory closure. In yet another effort to save the plant and its 1,200 jobs, hundreds of Goodyear employees protested Thursday outside the company's offices near Paris, setting fire to a pile of tires in protest. Inside, union representatives met with management.

There is an saying. Each person at birth is allotted a certain amount of bad luck. A person that wants to get rid of it quickly will buy a French car.

Maybe he financed the whole thing thru French banks and will walk away if the unions don't play ball. It's still a very risky deal.

No, it uses a BMW 6 cylinder engine. Great for performance, but the longevity... Well I haven’t had the greatest experiences. There’s a reason used BMWs are the prices they are.

I would assume that the French have seen that one before. See the follow type French mind set ;

Adoption of the so-called florange law: should the new obligation to search for a buyer imposed on companies intending to shut down a site be a cause for concern?

Then either most of my friends and I have been unlucky as a group, or you have been a fortunate individual. (One of my co-workers is a BMW fan. Owns 3. He drives a Dodge to work though) Either way, I don’t want another. As I said, I like their performance, but have not had great luck with their lifespan.

At my age maybe it’s time for a Grenadier, doesn’t look half bad.

Will it be a LeCar? A friend of mine had one and he took the Car decal off and painted Mon it it’s place... The local AMC dealership had a chance to buy a Chevy dealership and he did. He closed the AMC franchise...

The BMW 6 is a strong point of the brand. I finally traded my BMW with about 200k miles for a Toyota because I got tired of having to spend +$500 every time I went to the dealership for routine maintenance. Never had a problem with the engine.

As I said, personal experience. Yours was good, and I am glad for you. Mine less so. My bad luck.

I agree with your bottom line. I don’t want another BMW, either. For me, they are too expensive to maintain. I’ve had much better experiences with Toyotas and Hondas. Even mrs. riverdawg’s ten-year-old Buick has been less expensive to maintain.
