Tokyo gov't looks to ban gasoline vehicle sales by 2030

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is attempting to get ahead of the Japanese government in its environmental initiatives by targeting an end to sales of new gasoline cars in the capital by 2030, while opting for hybrid and electric vehicles, among others, it was revealed on Dec. 8.

It will also call on the automobile industry to stop selling new two-wheeled vehicles operated with gasoline by 2035. With the national government setting similar targets for the mid-2030s, Tokyo is looking to make itself an environmental trailblazer in the country with its earlier deadlines.

At a plenary session of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly on the same day, Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike said, "Moving ahead with the change to zero emissions is a duty shared by the world's great cities that are taking a stand against climate change."

In related initiatives until now, the metropolitan government has laid out support funds including for infrastructural development and for buying electric cars, fuel cell vehicles and other products.

But with the United States, Europe and China setting ambitious governmental targets for controls on gas emissions from vehicles, and banning the sale of automobiles that use gasoline, the metropolitan government decided it needed to dial up its response.

Although the Tokyo government's targets will apply to standard passenger vehicles, details such as adding light-class vehicles and other classifications will also be reviewed for inclusion. The process is set to differ from when the metropolitan government became the first prefecture in the country to set rules limiting diesel vehicle emissions in 2003 under an ordinance. Instead, it intends to seek cooperation from auto makers by working with industry bodies.

According to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association, in 2019 the number of new cars sold in the country -- in both small and standard vehicle classifications -- came in at 2,821,886. Of them, 221,166 automobiles -- about 7.8% -- were sold in Tokyo. Given the large concentration of businesses and people in the capital, it's expected that the new policy could greatly influence automakers' product development strategies and corporate activities.

In May 2019, the metropolitan government announced its "Zero Emission Tokyo Strategy" to bring carbon dioxide emissions effectively to zero by 2050. A detailed road map for the project was drawn up, and it has worked to make hydrogen fuels more widely used, among other measures.

Additionally, it suggests holding an international racing event involving electric cars and other vehicles that could be symbolic of the technology in order to increase momentum toward a world free of gasoline emissions.

They had better re-start their nuke plants then, because they won’t have nearly enough electricity.

It makes sense for Japan, they cannot be energy independent unless they have safe nuclear reactors.

If a country builds Domestic nuclear reactors...versus purchasing carbon based fuels from a far away or foreign enemy market, then EVs make sense.

EVs in North America do not make logistical/economical sense at this point in time. We are energy independent and carbon energy is more economical.

NO carbon dioxide emissions in a city of millions within ten years. Well, they better start moving folks out now.

So My wife and I were watch a French show where the murderer was driving an electric car to a location with an 800 foot (maybe 800 meters, it’s French and who cares) cliff to ‘drive’ the car over to hide the crime. Problem, not enough battery life left to get to the cliff. Now the police know it is a murder (dead body in dead electric car).

They’re going to pry that
accelerator pedal from under
my cold dead foot before I
give up my 500 hp gasoline
powered V-8. This is America
where freedom of choice reins
free. Good or bad, it’s still
MY choice!
Vehicle manufactures have forever
catered to the market that supports
their bottom lines. The Mustang,
Challenger, and Camaro in their
current retro styles, have made
millions for car companies. I’m
sorry, I’ve been hypnotized by
the rumble. A steady hum of a EV
sounds like a singer sewing
machine, and the thought of
owning one brings visions of
solar panels and windmills.
Slick back my hair with Brylcreem
and roll up a pack of cigarettes
in my tee shirt sleeve. I’m
old school, and damned proud
of it! It’s America.

Your repeated claims that”This is America where freedom of choice reins” is no longer the case. You’re gonna Go Green like every other peon around the world in The Great Reset whether you want to or not.

Then shoot me now, because I
choose or not. I’ll never
surrender. I’m 65, pretty
much set in my ways, and
fully understand what being
“American” is all about.
I’ve witnessed the days of

is, how dare I say, baseless.

They’ll need to project a pretty big moiré over their power plants to hide their offensive emissions.

Anyone pushing for the Green New Deal who is not pushing for crash development and deployment of a next-generation nuclear plant (likely using thorium) is pushing for taking the economy and living standards back 3-5 decades.

Musk warned people the other day that if they want electric cars they will need to build more power plants. Places like California will not listen. Even the blowhard commie Michael Moore is aware of this. Reality will be very painful.
