Pardon the historical pedantry, but I'm not entirely sure it's not on-point.

The article doesn't quite understand the history. The Avignon Papacy and the Great Western Schism were not about "two separate cultures" contending for anything. Both sides (and later, all three sides) were unquestionably Catholic.

The real story was that the French monarchy had achieved total control over the church, to the point that, not only was the Pope French, but he actually moved the whole Papal office to France. (And this while he was still supposed to be the Bishop of Rome, not Avignon.)

Catholics who weren't French or allied to France naturally did not see the total acquisition of the Church by France as a good thing, hence the "schism".

Now think about the degree to which Joe Biden and the Democrats have sold themselves to foreign powers (Ukraine, China, Saudi Arabia (?), who else ...) and you'll see what I mean about my comment being at least somewhat on-point.

I have studied the French Revolution and the things that happened leading up to it.

I’m not Catholic, I grew up in a local Baptist Church. They never claimed any attachment to the Catholic Church, much less that of the Jesuit Pope.

I have family members who are Catholic, some on the Right and some on the Left. They are nothing alike.

I have close friends that I worked with for many many years who are very serious active Catholics.

One of my best friends that I worked with over many many years was a Conservative Catholic and active member of the Knights of Columbus. (I’ve been a Free Mason for over 50 years) We spent a lot of time discussing many things, I found no problems with our different views. He was from Hastings Nebraska, Knights of Columbus and the local Masons had joint charity projects and they worked very closely together.

Patriotism and love of country is amplified by common Christian beliefs. It has been so in the USA since the American Revolution. (Yes, some Catholics in the beginning were loyalist toward England)

Good points. It's interesting that 642 years later, to have an anti-President does not require his physical relocation to Beijing, but simply fealty.
