The Tragedy of Black Education Is New
The Daily Signal ^ | 2 Dec 2020 | Walter Williams

Several years ago, Project Baltimore began an investigation of Baltimore’s school system. What it found was an utter disgrace.

In 19 of Baltimore’s 39 high schools, out of 3,804 students, only 14 of them, or less than 1%, were proficient in math.

In 13 of Baltimore’s high schools, not a single student scored proficient in math.

In five Baltimore City high schools, not a single student scored proficient in math or reading.

Despite these academic deficiencies, about 70% of the students graduate and are conferred a high school diploma—a fraudulent high school diploma.

The Detroit Public Schools Community District scored the lowest in the nation compared to 26 other urban districts for reading and mathematics at the fourth- and eighth-grade levels.

A recent video captures some of this miseducation in Milwaukee high schools: In two city high schools, only one student tested proficient in math and none are proficient in English.

Yet, the schools spent a full week learning about “systemic racism” and “Black Lives Matter activism.” By the way, a Nov. 19 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article asks: “How many Black teachers did you have? I’ve only had two.” The article concludes, “For future Black students, that number needs to go up.”

New York City is one of many school systems in the United States set to roll out Black Lives Matter-themed lesson plans. According to the New York City Department of Education, teachers will delve into “systemic racism,” police brutality, and white privilege in their classrooms.

Everything liberals touch they excrete upon.

Libs have totally taken over eddikashun, so it is obviously a large unclimbable pile of Obamastuff.

We may have hope after mass arrest and execution of EVERY NEA member.

White Privilege comes NOT from being White but from Acting White.

He laid out the essential issue.

If you are black and living in urbanized regions of America, you are getting a one-star education. It’s not just the quality of the teachers...it’s the background ‘noise’ (zero respect for any authority)...drug and alcohol problems, and fake support of politicians in the city. You’d be better off to just chop off things at the 9th grade and dump these kids on society.

Public education has become a massive industry unto itself, and a brilliant way for Democrats to fill their campaign coffers at the expense of taxpayers. Here in NJ our urban schools are similar, rubber-stamping meaningless diplomas for illiterate “graduates” who then offer nothing to potential employers. I’ve noticed a lot of the culling caused by this virus impacted them more than others; they simply offer a lot less, and could only be maintained as tokens when times were good.

An old Italian guy I knew described how the monarchy there wanted an uneducated population to dominate; our elites are no different. Many young people today (of all colors/races) are limited in their knowledge to what Big Tech puts on their phones.

You are aiming at the wrong target.

Suppose you’re a math teacher in an inner city school. Perhaps 1% of your students are proficient in math. How much of that is your fault?

Before you answer, take these three facts into account:

1. You get ZERO support when it comes to classroom discipline. Send a horribly misbehaving kid to the office, and that kid will be sent right back to you.

Now imagine you have two or three such kids in a class of 30. They’ll run around the room, talk on their cell phones, etc. - all while you are trying to teach.

2. You have ZERO input into the curriculum. Whatever the current insane fad is, you must teach it.

3. The days of the effective truant officer are long gone. So kids come to school only when they feel like it. There’s no way a kid is going to get a grasp of your subject when he’s not there half the time.

So who is at fault here? It’s the school boards. They alone set policy. But because they are behind the scenes they usually escape scrutiny.

(I’m not just guessing or exaggerating in this post. I spent many years teaching in inner-city schools. Nothing was easy.)

Living in suburbia w/ great schools I got into a debate with a son in law that good schools are more a function of the raw material sent into the school and less with buildings, teachers and administration. Educated involved parents that value the education is the key

Flat out, it’s the parents’ fault. They bring drugs, gang violence and single parent homes to their kids. They don’t care if their kids show up at school as long as they’re out of their hair for the day or week. They don’t care if little D’shantra turns up pg at 13. Hey, that baby will bring in more government freebies. They don’t care if 12 year old Trayvon is shooting up da ‘hood. Why the heck should they care if homework gets done at the kitchen table or if they learn cursive?

You’re missing a major point of urban/feral education. It is to postpone the dump until they are 18. Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure urban schools will try to educate any student who is willing and able to learn, but the reality is that most aren’t and won’t, so the school finds that its primary function is ‘keep the kids off of the streets’.

Many years ago I subbed for an English teacher in a nice small city high school. Her first two classes were on the college track. Kids came into class, heard the assignment and got to work. Second two classes were average classes. Actually more fun to teach since they asked questions if they didn’t understand the lesson.

Her last class was a ‘basic’ English course. It was being taught at the 5th-grade level. It was her smallest class and it was a zoo. Any teacher will tell you that if you have more than three kids out of control in a classroom, absolutely no learning will occur. In this class maybe 12 of the 15 were out of control. It was a very long hour.

In many urban schools, like those cited by the late, great Mr Williams the class I described in the last paragraph is the norm. Any teacher who really wants to teach will either transfer out or leave the profession.

My sister and her husband do a lot of subbing in county schools. They say they see 17 - 18 year olds who are functionally illiterate. How are these kids going get any kind of job? I’m not pointing fingers, but this is a lost generation, maybe more than one. And it’s just criminal when you consider what we spend on education, and when one points out the failings of the system, the response is alway we need to spend even more.

You have to admit the LBJ “war on poverty” was a huge success.

Destroyed the black family structure and created a huge class of fed gov dependents.

Yes, LBJ destroyed the black family plain and simple. As well as incurring trillions of dollars in cost to fight the War on Poverty, Which is still ongoing....

“...They say they see 17 - 18 year olds who are functionally illiterate. How are these kids going get any kind of job?”

In the early 20th century these kids would have been allowed/encouraged to leave school at the end of the 8th grade, likely without an 8th-grade diploma. They would have started doing manual labor, construction, and if ambitious, perhaps begun to learn a trade.

Laws now prohibit ‘dropping out’; the age varies by state. It used to be 16 but now is often 17 or even 18. So they are stuck in a school where they don’t learn and don’t want to be. Many spend their days acting out, ensuring their classmates also won’t be able to learn.

To make matters worse for them, child labor laws and a huge influx of illegal aliens have pretty much shut out native-born Americans from entry-level, low skill jobs. Construction in most areas is completely dominated by workers who don’t speak English and who are willing to work for less than the minimum wage.

Not sure where you’re located but those illegals working construction make good money around here (Indiana). I see a lot of them parking nice pickups at the jobsites. The Trump economy has produced a tremendous surge in construction and a strong demand for labor.

Actually, they haven’t really made their presence felt where I live. Black and white teenagers can still get jobs mowing lawns, working fast food and house construction is still pretty much conducted in English. But a lot are bussing tables and washing dishes in local restaurants.
