Gov. Lamont announces delivery of 141,000 laptops to students across the state

Gov. Ned Lamont announced the delivery of 141,000 laptops to students in need in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

During a news conference that happened at Manchester High School, he said the state was the first in the nation to provide learning devices to every student in need.

Lamont referenced his administration's "Everybody Learns" initiative, which launched in July.

The initiative included a $43.5 million investment in remote learning solutions, which came from the CARES Act. The money was used to buy 82,000 laptops and establish 44,000 at-home internet connections for Connecticut students.

It was added to a $24 million effort in March when 60,000 laptops were provided to high schoolers.

Combined, Lamont said the two initiatives invested more money per student in remote learning since March than all but two other states in the nation.

I read that as 141,000 laptops per student. Which struck me as a little excessive.

My first thought was if there is a mandatory wireless carrier to use these laptops that just happens to be owned by the governors brother-in-law, or some similar arrangement...

That’s more than twice as much as they need.

Give each kid a laptop, preload it with “favorites” in the brouser like Khanacademy, and then close all the schools and lay off all the teachers, admins, etc.

Put it back in the hands of the parents. Lousy parents = lousy education. Good parents = good education.

street value

Hopefully the laptops have a "greeting screen" identifying the street value in units of heroin, crack, and a wide variety of other drugs.

_That_ would be information the students could use!

(The curious kids will take apart the machines to try to find the little people inside.. :-) ).

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was passed by Congress with overwhelming, bipartisan support and signed into law by President Trump on March 27th, 2020. This is what made the laptops available.

Three things here, one, President Trump was the person who had final approval on this yet his name was not mentioned once, secondly, my daughter in law teaches through computers for primary level and she can’t find enough time to get to all the children especially for individual problems, and finally, why are they giving laptops to preschoolers when there isn’t enough time to teach the schoolers correctly and since trying to teach a group of preschoolers is like herding cats. Blown money for PR.
