I have a nice collection of Mosin Nagant rifles. Pre-WW2 and WW2 (round and hex receivers) 91/30s, M39s and a M44. I bought them because they were cheap. I recall some of them being $59.95 and, as the saying goes "If your rifle breaks, you buy a new one." I also had what turned out to be remarkable foresight and purchase a lot of the spam cans of surplus Russian 7.62x54R. Which left me with THOUSANDS of rounds that I pretty much paid pennies for. Yeah it's corrosive, filthy and smells bad but it's all part of the fun shooting a 19th century main battle rifle.

So one day I was packing up some Mosins to go to a rifle range up in the mountains where it gets really cold in the winter and jokingly said to my wife "I should get one of the old Russian hats to stay warm. She is a theatrical costumer and so for Christmas (11 or 12 years ago) a Ushanka appeared under the tree. I had no choice but to wear it at least once. But I got a lot of positive response from people at range and it just kind of evolved into a tradition.
