STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — As families across New York City grapple with ensuring their children are getting an education amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, new data shows that enrollment at public schools is dropping across the five boroughs.
According to preliminary data obtained by Chalkbeat, school rosters lost about 31,000 students compared to this time last year — or 3.4%. Current enrollment at New York City public schools is just over 901,000, not including charter schools or early childhood programs.
The analysis found bigger drops in enrollment at elementary and middle schools, while high schools remain stagnant.
Losses in enrollment were more concentrated in schools serving mostly wealthy families. But overall, far more public school students from low-income families have left their schools.
At schools where more than 80% of students come from low-income families, enrollment dropped by 19,000 students, or 4%, according to Chalkbeat’s analysis. At the city’s most affluent schools, enrollment dropped by 2,800 students, or 12%.
While the figures can provide a glimpse of enrollment trends in New York City public schools, the DOE said student registers aren’t finalized or audited yet.
“School buildings have been open for just over a month and their registers are not yet finalized or audited, so any declarations about enrollment are premature,” Katie O’Hanlon, a DOE spokesperson, wrote in a statement to Chalkbeat.

Good news! I bet the less well-off people will scrimp and save to get their children the best education they possibly can.
Or maybe they’ll homeschool.
