If you’re down on Social Security, please don’t complain when Democrats warn people that Republicans are opposed to Social Security. You can’t have it both ways
That’s a good point.
Tax RATES in general, when one factors in state and local taxes, are past the point of maximum revenue. But COVID-19 has devastated revenues, while increasing costs and obligations as well. SS / Medicare / Medicaid / etc. will see some reduced costs due to the fatalities, but, for every fatality there are probably well over 10x as many victims experiencing long hospital stays (some in ICU) at high cost, some are left with very long term or even rest-of-life new problems, and so on. Not much help there. Millions of formerly self-sufficient people are in serious trouble: For example, many small business owners are barely hanging on, and have depleted their resources or gone into debt doing so. This makes recovery difficult: Federal assistance can help, but that exacerbates the spending problem.
What we need are policies to produce a sustained real dollar US GDP growth rate north of 10%, while keeping the growth of gov’t to under 5%, after maybe a decade of 1% gov’t growth. With the resources this country has, that kind of growth is more than doable, but it takes a long term outlook plus a “Trump” as POTUS for a few more terms, supported by Congress, and similarly inclined Governors and State legislatures. We’d be so rich and powerful that most any problem not hinging on our people’s character could be readily solved. But how in God’s name do we actually get to the political solutions that lead to the $$ solution?
(Which leads to the character problems, among other things.)
