Actually that stunt worked great for NY early this year when a gun control case was about to be overturned by the Supreme Court. In that case, they pulled there was no law (since they changed it a week earlier), and that was good enough for Roberts to deny cert. Not so lucky this time.
Roberts never votes lib on 2A issues. Was that part of a deal with the Dems? Or to keep the arms on both sides, since the right will never ever give up their arms?
