He saw the writing on the wall, and jumped before he was pushed. No way he was going to remain Speaker or even Minority Leader, after 2018. Being demoted to just another House member probably held little appeal.

No, he lost. He retired while still in office and refused to fundraise for the candidate who were running.

If I remember correctly, it was an agreement so he would not be voted out directly in a vote of no confidence.
