Lots of cops carried them for a “drop” pistol. Bill Jordan, in NO SECOND PLACE WINNER told of a border patrolman who shot a criminal trying to escape across a small foot bridge into Mexico. The criminal fired two shots at the PB man before being killed. His pistol fell into the river.
Jordan said he went down one night, and as he leaned over where the shooting occurred, a cheap pistol with two shots fired accidentally fell out of his shirt pocket.
Next day under a judges order, a magnet was dropped into the river at that spot, and several cheap pistols, each with two shots fired were retrieved from the water.
