The Immaculate Election

Back in the days when sports were a pleasurable diversion from the grind of daily life, professional football presented some of the most exciting and unlikely turns of events that Americans could experience. On December 23, 1972, as the clock wound down on the divisional playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Oakland Raiders, a deflected pass from Terry Bradshaw to Frenchy Fuqua wound up in the hands of Franco Harris, who galloped to the winning touchdown. Pandemonium swept through Three Rivers Stadium, as Steelers fans celebrated not only their first ever playoff victory, but the incredible way it happened, having come about on a fourth-and-ten Hail Mary with only 22 seconds remaining on the game clock.

But controversy surrounding Harris's catch arose immediately, and this has made it one of the most famous plays in NFL history, forever known in athletic lore as the "Immaculate Reception." It was unclear whether Fuqua illegally touched the ball before Harris grabbed it, and there is no clear camera angle showing whether Harris caught the deflection cleanly or if the ball touched the field before he gripped it. Replay technology was not employed in those days to verify the call, and Raider Jack Tatum, who collided with Fuqua right at the time of the deflection of Bradshaw's pass, long asserted that the officials ultimately let the touchdown stand not because they were certain that Harris had caught the ball in accordance with the rules, but because they were afraid the fans might riot if the call were reversed. Steelers faithful revel in the glory of their good fortune, while Raiders fans reject it as a fraud, with former silver and black safety George Atkinson scorning it as the "immaculate deception."

The comparison is wrong. There was no intent for the Steelers to cheat on this play.

A better example would be the “holy roller” play, where the Raiders kept intentionally fumbling the ball forward into the endzone.

Tom Brady tuck rule. It was a fumble. The NFL hated the Raiders and Al Davis.

It was a bad call, but again, the Patriots were not intentionally cheating on the play.

They didn’t object either.

Maybe I missed as I scanned the original article, but I saw no mention of the elephant in the room, which is, of course, “rigged” voting machines.

This election reminds me of the old baseball “Blacksox Scandal” where most of the team was on the take....

Imagine a football game where the weaker team continually made illegal plays throughout the fourth quarter, continued to play to score a touchdown after regulation time had ended (still losing), and was posted enough bonus points by the scoreboard operator to win the game. And every illegality was upheld by the referees.

If SCOTUS upholds this coup d’état, America’s Constitutional Republic is dead.

The last remaining option after the ballot box is using the “ammo box”.

72??? Wow, that seems like yesterday. Football players were a different breed then, a hell of a lot of less prima-donnas.

The Republic was dead when ALL of our elected and appointed clapped like trained seals for an ineligible usurper on Usurpation Day, January 20, 2009.

Words have meaning or the Constitution is an illusion.

Obama is NOT a natural born citizen.

Anyone with more than ONE nationality is NOT naturally an American.

Now we have Kamala Harris to carry on the Obama legacy of illegitimacy..

If SCOTUS upholds this coup d’état, America's Constitutional Republic is dead.

You have stated the problem in the most succinct way possible. The nation is on life support and we need a miracle.

Precisely why Obama wanted Harris.

I prefer Jack Lambert style of football.

The proper analogy is a football game where one side cheats the entire game, but is still losing by 3 touchdowns when the refs, suddenly, suspend play and ask all the fans to go home. The next morning everyone finds out that the other team came back on the field by themselves in the middle of the night and scored 10 consecutive touchdowns and were declared the winner by ESPN.

Fellow Freepers, I have to invoke the Men's Basketball Gold Medal game in the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich.

That was a winner. The majority of judges came from communist countries. Tom Burleson was not on the court-he could have prevented it. Then there was the IOC head who intervened at the critical moment.

So Biden is Fuqua who will touch the presidency without actually gripping it and Harris will step in to take it across the line? (He picked Harris to complete the analogy?)
