Court gives France three months to fulfil climate change commitments
France24 ^ | November 19, 2020

The government of France, which brokered the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change, was hauled before the Council of State by Grande-Synthe, a low-lying northern coastal town which is particularly exposed to the effects of climate change.

The Council, which rules on disputes over public policies, noted that "while France has committed itself to reducing its emissions by 40% in 2030 compared to 1990 levels, it has, in recent years, regularly exceeded the 'carbon budgets' it had set itself."

It also noted that President Emmanuel Macron's government had, in a decree in April, deferred much of the reduction efforts beyond 2020.

Despite Macron's headline 2017 promise to "make our planet great again" -- a swipe at climate denialist US President Donald Trump who vowed to "make America great again" -- France is far off track to meet its commitments under the 2015 treaty.

Before issuing a final ruling on the matter, the Council of State gave the government three months to justify "how its refusal to take additional measures is compatible with the respect of the reduction path chosen in order to achieve the targets set for 2030."

Corinne Lepage, lawyer for the town of Grande Synthe, hailed the decision as "historic".

The ruling means that "policies must be more than nice commitments on paper," she said.

Well, it’s their agreement. Live by the sword, die by the sword. :)

If this was the US, I’d tell the legislature to use their power to undo the very law the SCOTUS used against you.

“...Grande-Synthe, a low-lying northern coastal town which is particularly exposed to the effects of climate change.”

In what way is Grande-Synthe particularly exposed? Is the sea rising? Or is it possible that the land is sinking?

I ask because there is a pathway in England called ‘The Broomway’. It is very dangerous because it is covered by high tides twice a day. It’s been in use for something like 600 years...

“Does that mean they have to Napalm china which 90% of this supposed global warming comes from?”

Agree, they don’t seem to understand there that France can’t do jack about saving the world from Global Warming, because they’re too damn small.

They almost seem to think that if France, alone, would act according to their promises, their flood plain would be saved. Interesting though, the last time I checked, CO2 doesn’t stop at Immigration (borders), so shutting down France might buy them one month - and then China will simply make up the difference and world will keep warming.

p.s. - I like to concede Global Warming to liberals and then start asking them how they plan to deal with China. Nuke them or something? Kind of tells them to put up or shut up.

Well, napalm would release CO2, so that’s right out. No, my point is that the Broomway’s existence and use for over 600 years shows that sea-level, at least in Exeter has not changed very much for quite some time. Either that or the Exeter coast is rising at exactly the same rate as sea level, which to my mind is unlikely.

A whole two weeks we’ve been out of it. In two months, we’ll be right back in it. Unless this upcoming press conference is legit of course.

They could start by seizing any vehicle owned by the judge and cutting off all utilities to the judge’s home.
