Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, could be among the most influential lawmakers when the next Congress convenes in January -- with Senate Republicans holding a 52-48 majority at best.
Collins position of prominence wasnt certain. Polling before the election showed Democrats with a good chance of taking control of the Senate and polls showed her campaigning from behind against her Democratic opponent, Sara Gideon, Maines House speaker, who outspent her.
But Democrats hopes for a blue wave crashed and Collins handily won her race by 9 points, a larger win than even she expected.
I was very gratified that the margin was so big -- that people were able to look at the individual, she told Politico. They were smart enough to reject the outright lies that Chuck Schumer and his PAC have hoisted.

That FL seat was for their state Senate, not US Senate.
Agreed. I suspect that she wont run in 2026 though. The GOP needs to recruit someone to replace her in the interim.
Unfortunately we are going to have to rely on Collins, Romney , and Murkowski. And that scares the hell out of me.
WHAT? Which FL Senator was up for re-election...Scott or Rubio?
The GOP also needs to recruit a decent Senate candidate in Arizona. The gun grabbing China sellout Mark Kelly only gets 2 years before hes up for re-election. Its totally unacceptable that a traditional red state like Arizona has 2 Democrat senators.
[Yup...that seat is hers as long as she wants it. Those polls were off by 15% to 20%. Suppression polls.]
Lying is something politicians have to do to keep their jobs when their constituents disagree with them. In antiquity, courtiers pretended to worship their rulers to keep their heads. Today, in blue states, GOP elected officials pretend to be simpatico with their left-wing voters to get re-elected.
Some Freepers say Collins is no different from a Democrat. If she were, they wouldnt run anyone against her or spend $100m* trying to take her out that could have been used elsewhere. Without her, ME would be solid blue. Shes a wily political operator, and more conservative than all Democrat senators except for Manchin. But Manchin is in a solid red state that has Republicans in pretty much all statewide offices and gave Trump a 45% margin. (So hes somewhat moderate just to survive politically). Whereas Trump lost Maine, underperforming Collins by 7%. By Maine standards, Collins is so right-wing, she might as well be Barry Goldwater and Joe McCarthy rolled into one. Yet she keeps winning.
I think people forget that in one man, one vote systems, pols are elected to be followers of the popular will, not leaders. Alexander the Great could lead because he could kill** anyone who disagreed. Pols in democratic systems cannot. Collins is far more conservative than her electorate. Manchin is far more liberal. In each of their ways, both are excellent water carriers for their respective parties.
** And when he died, his entire clan was wiped out - mother, wife, kids, et al.
Sadly the invading swarms of former Californians and illegals has radically changed the numbers in places like Colorado and Arizona.
‘Ive been a huge non-fan of Collins, and didnt appreciate her no vote on ACB. But we need every seat we can get, so welcome back, Susan, I guess.”
There are TWO things I want out of her, and I’ll be happy: 1) Continuation of the Filibuster; 2) No packing of the courts.
I suspect she’ll support both (I’m almost sure of that)...so she’s JUST FINE in my book. GOP ‘purity’ doesn’t matter for shit if it means giving Harris UNCONTESTED POWER to destroy the country first, since what good are ‘pure’ conservatives, if the Democrats are allowed to rig elections, have mass amnesty, mass immigration, much other stuff, and thereby never let our party get more than 35% of the vote in future elections (and no, as bad as this election was rigged, this is minor league for what the Dems will do, if they can).
So I’ll give her a pass, if she at least gives us the chance to hold the country together through this nightmare.
They were smart enough to reject the outright lies that Chuck Schumer and his PAC have hoisted(ABOUT ME).
HOPEFULLY she understands that Crying Chuck would slit her throat if given the opportunity.
If he wants something you should ALWAYS be on the other side.
I get that the longer you keep him there as a demented old man who stopped functioning/caring when Dems lost Congress actually works to your favor, but why not rub salt in the wound?
If anything, it might solidify his support to retain Leadership, and see above.
I have never understood the failure of conservative PACS to make the Left own their losses. It is a valuable and necessary strategy. The Democrats do victory lap ads in deep-blue Metros.
The reality is New England has 1/2 the population as California does but as a voting block has 12 US Senators and she is the only Republican among them, we should be thankful if only that she maintains the majority for the rest. Add in NY and NJ and that’s 16 seats to California’s two.
One message the GOP needs to start sending out relentlessly is how the Dems are screwing NE even with all that firepower, Virginia has net spending of + $9,000 per capita but NE loses tremendously. CT has a net - $4,000 loss, NJ has a $2,368 loss, MA has a loss of $2,343, NY has a $1,792 loss, and NH losses $234 per capita per year.
To be fair to Collins she brings back $ to Maine rather than losing it.
If Biden wins, he just might take care of our Romney problem.
Great post. She came through and saved Kavanaugh, which was pivotal. If the GOP lost her seat to the democrat who is in her 40s it would have been gone from the GOP for 20 years.
Look what happened when Snow retired in Maine...lost GOP seat that’s not coming back.
She is gratified that the Democrats didn’t make her votes “disappear”.
Whats up with her?
Did she get a Lindsey Graham transfusion?
Polling is absolute garbage, they had her losing by 6 or even 10 and she wins by 9
—
Why, their poll was only off by a mere 18%.
” I personally will never respond to a post from the scumbags.”
You just did!
NO they flipped a Dem seat.

I really don’t know what she gets out of running as a Republican. Is it the attention she gets for being contrary?
How do we trust Romney, S. Collins and Murkowski will not be offered fantastic backroom deals by Schumer and come out smiling as Dems? God forbid for America’s sake.
Party switch one way or the other happened 21 diferent times in the US Senate (one was Richard Shelby to GOP in 1994. Others were Jeffords, Nighthorse, Lieberman, Arlen Specter in the long list. I guess loyalty applies to organized crime, not DC.)
Funny if Romney went Dem and then had a long period of gazing into the sky at sundown and meditated, coming out to crush the Dems time after time as a traitor on key votes. Ha.
