Members of the United States Marines have officially begun a training operation in Taiwan to help boost its military's combat readiness, the island's navy confirmed Monday.

Amphibious training exercises led by a group of visiting Marine Raiders were described as "routine" by Taiwan's Naval Command. It marked the first public acknowledgement of American troops in Taiwan since Washington and Taipei ended formal diplomatic ties in 1979.

The Raiders are believed to have arrived in Taiwan as early as October 26, but observed two weeks of quarantine as part of the island's measures to contain COVID-19.

The U.S. Marines are the first allied troops to conduct joint military training with Taiwan since the coronavirus outbreak began eight months ago, the newspaper said.

"In order to maintain regional peace and stability, routine security cooperation and exchanges between the militaries of Taiwan and the United States are proceeding as usual," the Taiwanese Navy said in a statement on its website.

Navy Command said it would not give any details about the training exercises.

I’d be making plans to leave ASAP ... and for a historical note, I was on WESTPAC in ‘79 headed for Taiwan when President Carter pissed off Taiwan (I think he closed their embassy in DC). Never did get to see that country.

” Never did get to see that country.”

Sorry, you missed out. I was on Westpac in ‘78.

Well, if Biden becomes president we will be sacrificing more of our people fighting other countries’ wars, but I doubt it will be nuclear. That’s too risky for politicians personally. They prefer to send our troops to hell-holes like Afhanistan and Africa.

Agreed. They don’t mind soaking up defense contractor money, and graft from other countries in exchange for some blood. As long as it’s not their blood, or anyone they care about.

Absolutely, and defense contractors only make money if the stuff gets used and the DoD buys more. They have a vested interest in perpetual war.

“I don’t think Taiwan has nukes.”

Loan them two fully loaded Ohio Class subs. That should calm things down for a while.

We should also make port visits with our major carrier groups and subs.
