The head of the UK’s oldest conservative think tank has condemned government orders for supermarkets to barricade aisles containing ‘non-essential’ items during England’s lockdown, saying Boris Johnson’s administration should “leave it to the public to decide what they want and need to buy”.

The Conservative national government has quietly instructed supermarkets to close departments selling so-called “non-essential” items during England’s second lockdown, with media reporting in recent days citizens’ anger at not being to buy items including kettles, socks, and baby clothes.

Peter Hitchens already has dubbed his government the “Johnson Junta”.

I live in Spain, which has different tiers for different provinces. My province is in Tier 4, which means we are under a curfew that starts at 10pm. All bars and restaurants are closed except for takeout until November 23rd. You can't leave town except for essential business like a doctor visit. And of course, masks to be worn outside except for athletic activities like jogging.

We have a favorite small bar we go to for a drink and Tapas. The owner has told us he probably won't reopen because he was working 7 days/week before this and barely staying afloat. It's a shame. Our town has over 21,000 full time residents and since the summer season began on July 1st 1 person has died of Covid and in the past 2 weeks a little over 100 people have tested positive.

Only liberals can make a booming economy seem like wartime.
Without the war.
And it’ll continue until we decide to bring war to the liberals.
And it will not be an “understanding” war.

So could these stores put some “essential” items in every aisle?

“ So could these stores put some “essential” items in every aisle”

Who determines what items are essential? Do they sell only bread and water?

...citizens’ anger at not being to buy items including kettles, socks, and baby clothes.

Those all sound like essential items to me. They may not be things you buy every few days like bread, milk or eggs, but they are all necessary items that people have to buy or replace every now and then.

“Kind of like Sundays when there were “Blue Laws”.”

I wonder what the affect on Covid if most businesses were shut down 1 day out of seven?

You have an interesting thought there for scientific research. (Potentially 1/7 less of a general exposure risk to covid).
