We lived outside of London ‘61-’63(I was 13-15) and we got some awesome fireworks to pop for Guy Fawkes day.

I am on FaceBook and have many of my husband’s relatives as ‘friends’. I have NEVER commented on British politics on my page. My in-law relatives are unhinged with hatred for Trump with really nasty comments toward me. I did point out that they only know what they have been told by our Leftist Media. A real deluge of nastiness ensued after my comment.

They don’t understands the freedoms we have in this country. And that the Media does not declare who is President. I just want a CLEAND AND FAIR election. They have destroyed me with their nasty comments, but I am sure I will survive ; )

I always get a chuckle out of Guy Fawkes day. God only knows how a harebrained scheme to blow up the Parliament building by a bunch of two-bit 17th century revolutionaries that never came anywhere near fruition and resulted in the participants being executed resulted in a major national holiday named after the ringleader. That would like us having an Aaron Burr day to celebrate his equally hare brained scheme to overthrow the government and name himself Emperor.

It was not a mistake it was propaganda. the nets wanted the optic of the world celebrating Biden winning, most of the clueless a-holes who watched will never know the truth.

You are so correct. Funny thing is, a lot of the tolerant people use the “NOH8” tag on their page. Yet they are the worst violators. Hippo-critters.

Reminiscent of Obama as the opening act for rock concerts in Europe.

What? I’d figure all forms of celebration internationally would be for Biden, and all of creation would rejoice.

I too still have friends and family there.

There is a phenomenon about the USA - they just know it is the most powerful country so they ALL have an opinion, not realizing just how bad their media really is. Some think they should be able to vote! ...as it is too important to be left in the hands of ‘stupid’ American’s only.

It took me many years to really understand this country. I can certify that they do not. Most don’t know their own history, let alone ours. Most still trust the government. It is really the same worldwide and I don’t think many American’s, even on the right, really realize that.

Americans really have no idea what it is really like in Britain. And the Brits really have NO IDEA what our guaranteed freedoms give us here.

But boy, have my ‘in-law’relatives been scathing. My nephew’s wife said she looks on America as ‘one big soap opera’. I have never commented on anything political about Britain. But she, the nastiest one, has now unfriended me. I’m sure I won’t be posting anything at all on the rest of the relatives pages. And I do FaceBook so my husband can still be somewhat connected to his family. Silly me.

Sorry to hear this, although it’s happening everywhere it seems.

It says more about them than anything, although they don’t realize it as they’ve been conditioned to believe their ‘outrage’ is a virtue. They are superior and YOU are the problem. That they can’t have a civilized conversation is the problem.

They’re like children throwing temper tantrums.

I’ve probably been lucky, mine are pretty quiet about it all. Although I doubt, going forward, that will remain as I expect things will become more intense.

And you’re correct - American’s don’t understand Britain either. That said, I’d *never* think about moving back. Every time I visit I feel more aware of the differences. My wife and I did tell a few that we voted Trump. You could see the gears turning. They at least commented, “we must not hear everything from over here”. Which is on point - because many make the assumption, STILL, that their media and government would tell them everything.

I find Europe in general to be like this. There’s so much they do not question.

It will soon be the case that here in Britain few people will recognise the reason for Nov.5 bonfire/fireworks either. The Guy Fawkes thing has been steadily eroding from the national consciousness for quite a long time now. Partly it’s Health and Safety fussiness about the fire risks, partly child safeguarding (the custom of small unaccompanied children standing at street corners asking for ‘Penny For the Guy?’ would now be viewed with horror). But mainly because the whole thing has been overwhelmed in public consciousness by Halloween a few days earlier.

Until about twenty years ago hardly anybody here had even heard of Halloween or ‘trick or treat’. But quite suddenly the customs were imported from the US as a merchandising opportunity, and now they’re everywhere.

Some British statesman said that Guy Fawkes was the only person ever to enter Parliament with honest intentions.

I was living in London up until the early 70’s and I remember the chants of “A penny for the guy” and the “conkers” (chestnut) mashing games.

The Halloween craze is picking up in Poland as well and I don’t understand it.

That is sad — I remember the Guy Fawkes fireworks and shows in Lewes which was a sight, even for a Catholic like me!

I also grew up on Richmal Crompton’s “William” books and the stories of Guy Fawkes. It is sad that that part of Britain’s culture is dying
