8 Nov: Australian Financial Review: (”Conservative” Australian Prime Minister) Morrison congratulates Biden
by Phillip Coorey
Scott Morrison has congratulated Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and said his government was looking forward to working with the new Democratic administration on issues including ***climate change, regional security and suppressing the coronavirus.
Former prime minister (SAME POLITICAL PARTY) Malcolm Turnbull said it was a relief to have “a return to normal transmission” and end to the destabilisation of the world order...
But both he and (LEFTWING LABOR PARTY FORMER PRIME MINISTER) Kevin Rudd, speaking on the ABC’s Insiders program, urged Mr Morrison to use the Biden victory to pivot on climate change by adopting more ambitious targets, including net zero emissions by 2050.
Mr Biden will rejoin the Paris climate change accord and commit to net zero by 2050...

(Prime Minister) Morrison welcomed President-elect Biden’s commitment to multilateral institutions and strengthening democracies.
“We also look forward to working with President-elect Biden and his Administration to continue to fight the COVID-19 global pandemic and recession, to develop a vaccine, drive a global economic recovery, and develop new technologies to reduce global emissions as we practically confront the challenge of climate change,” Mr Morrison said in a statement...

Australia’s ambassador to the US, Arthur Sinodinos, said Australia was keen to work with a Biden Administration on investments in clean technology to lower emissions.
“We laid out our lower emissions technology roadmap because we believe that when it comes to climate change is not just saying what you say the outcome is that you want to achieve, it’s how you achieve it,’’ he said.
“And what we have done is to lay out a roadmap for how you achieve it and the Prime Minister is keen to promote that roadmap in discussions both with the Biden administration if it comes to fruition and also other countries in our own region.
“And there’s a lot in the Biden campaign material around investing in renewable technologies which actually overlaps very significantly with the approach that we want to take.”...

Turnbull: “I can speak with some authority on this. Morrison’s concern is that the combination of the right wing of the Liberal Party and the National Party, and the right wing media, mostly owned by Murdoch, will go after him, as they went after me, if he is seen to do anything that suggests he is taking climate change seriously or too seriously,’’ he said.
“So he is basically walking on eggshells.
“Now, Trump has lost. Murdoch’s man in the White House has been defeated. The Americans are going to be taking a leading position, globally, on climate action once again”...

Niklas Höhne, founder of the NewClimate Institute
Taken together, the US and China going to net zero emissions would reduce our estimate of end-of-century warming to 2.3-2.4C, taking the world 25-40% of the way towards limiting warming to the Paris Agreement’s 1.5C limit...

Bill Hare, CEO of Climate Analytics
This could be an historic tipping point: with Biden’s election China, the USA , EU, Japan South Korea – two thirds of the world economy and over 50% of global GHG emissions – would have net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by mid-century commitments...

Tasneem Essop, executive director of Climate Action Network International
We can all breath a bit easier today. Thank you to all in the US who worked and fought so hard to get us here. A triumph of democracy over fascism. Congratulations Joe Biden and Kamala Harris...

Lord Nicholas Stern, chair of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment
Biden’s victory should set America back on course to play a leading role in global efforts to fight climate change. And the rest of the world is moving, with strong commitments over the last year in Europe, China, Japan, and many countries across the world to go to net zero emissions by mid-century.
