Masks don’t work well, but if I, being in a moderately high-risk category, can reduce the viral load during exposure, even a little, I will continue to wear masks when in public.

As someone better than me said, “Nuts”. The reservoir is ur lungs filled with virus particles you could not expel. Keep wearing that mask 24/7 and you’ll end up like your namesake - a brain in a jar.

On the other hand, in Japan, S. Korea, Taiwan, and other East Asian countries, properly worn masks are the norm, they have low infection and mortality rstes.

The population in most of Europe does too. Doesn’t it seem possible that less exposure could be part of it.

Could very well be. Could also be that Europeans, like Americans, self-report that they are wearing masks, but overstate their mask-wearing and/or improperly wear their masks (i.e., loose fitting and/or under the nose).
