God willing. As someone who lives in a relatively purple Houston suburb, I can tell you there’s a great deal of animosity against the Democrats at the county level, particularly the County Judge (chief executive) Lina Hidalgo and District Attorney Kim Ogg,* over the Covid response and crime.

*I’ve said before on these pages that I know Ogg professionally and like her, I voted for her in the last election, and I think a good deal of the criticism against her is unfair. But even I am voting for her opponent this time.

Was her GOP opponent worse than her last time?

Yep, all the way down Memorial Drive . . and Woodway . . . and San Felipe . . . is Trump Country.

Thanks. Glad to see he’s still confident for Texas. He needs to keep an eye out though for sure.

Her GOP opponent and predecessor, Devon Anderson, was appointed to replace her husband, Mike Anderson, after he died. She wasn’t that bad generally, but she prosecuted the two activists who filmed Planned Parenthood discussing selling fetal tissue. That angered a lot of Republicans, including me. With a relatively conservative Democrat who happened to be my friend running against Anderson, it was an easy decision to vote to punish Anderson.

I don’t regret my vote, either. There have been a lot of problems with crime, but not much of it is Ogg’s fault. Bail reform was mandated by a federal judge, and everything else was done by the liberal County government, mostly over Ogg’s opposition.

A note on Ogg’s political history: Her dad was Jack Ogg, last of the conservative Texas Democrats. Kim was actually a Republican earlier in her career, but switched when realizing that she wasn’t likely to win many Republican primaries as a lesbian.

A biker says “where did u get the hog?” She says “at the Harley shop.” The biker says “I was talking to the bike!”

Thanks. Given creeping demographic change in the Houston area (i.e. ethnicities that tend to vote more, although not entirely, Democratic), Ogg may be a shoo-in for another term. But at least you tried.

You may be right. But this is the first election without straight ticket voting, and no one really knows how that will play out. My best guess is there will be a good amount of ticket-splitting and voters leaving the down-ticket races blank.
