Our former accountant warned us to cut it close on witholding every year because he has a lot of people whose refunds were quickly drained by crooks.

I have heard of that happening, but nobody I know has had it happen to them. The one common denominator here, is your accountant. I'm not suggesting that they are crooked, but perhaps they don't use best practices?!
