I am wondering if it takes more than legislation by Congress alone to make D.C. a state.
Do existing states have any say so in admitting a new state?
Rather than making DC a state, we should enlarge DC. Virginia and Maryland should cede their land where most DC fed workers live to DC. There was good reason that DC was not made a state.
Why not make No Virginia, north of Fredericksburg, Residential DC, and Maryland into one state. Problem solved. No new senators, no new states. Rename Maryland the State of Waste.
President Trump should short circuit this by re-locating Washington government agencies to various states outside D.C. De-swamp it so to speak. Make D.C. a museum to visit but no longer the concentration of political power in the USA.
Many of us do not like, nor respect Lindsey Graham, but should recognize his Republican seat is one of three preventing the dems overtaking the Senate.
Just give it back to Maryland. There, they have their “representation.” Or is this not really about that...?
I think at least the residential areas of DC should be returned to Maryland.
Then they have a real problem...
IIRC, the seat of the FEDERAL Government can NOT be in any specific state.
That’s why that area is called a DISTRICT.
How about splitting texas into 5 new states? It’s in the agreement from 1845 getting them into the USA. Also split northern cali, oregon and washington east of cascades into state of jefferson. Looks like 12 new conservative senators to me.
I hear what you’re saying. Being a state doesn’t mean what it used to, but unless they can get a change to the Constitution, we have the system we have and it works as long as people are not trying to overthrow it.
The people that want to consolidate power have transformed the cities. If they had transformed the rural areas, they’d want there to be three senators for every state. The ends justify the means, for them.
We need to take back the cities, but even more importantly, we need to end the fraud that has persisted for generations in the Dem strongholds. They would be the perpetual minority party without massive cheating.
I don’t think they can do that actually.
If I recall correctly (going back 58 years) the DISTRICT of COLUMBIA was established specifically so that no single State could claim the Capitol of the United States.
The district lines were drawn from land ceded by Virginia and Maryland and to be governed by Congress.
I don’t think Congress is allowed to have it’s own state, at least it shouldn’t.
