Many years ago I worked for a federal district judge.
He had a .44 Special under the bench, and another in his desk drawer.

So far as I know nobody ever even contemplated trying anything, even when he had a trial of 18 drug smugglers . . . he was known as "Maximum John" for a reason - 6'5" and 300 pounds easy. There was order in the court!

In my father's time, there was another judge in SGA known as "Two Gun Charlie Worrill" - because he presided with two loaded .44 Specials on the bench . . . and used one for a gavel. Former Texas Ranger, another big man.

They just don't make 'em like they used to.
