Good question. I think it plays to their deceitful impulse to virtue signal. Plus they probably thought having at least one live person on the screen is a good thing.
Because voice recognition technology isn’t that great and if you’ve ever watched closed captioning on a video you can see the messed up English it gives you.
Additionally, ASL is not just English with signs. It’s its own language with its own grammar structure and those Deaf who are fluent in it are not usually as fluent in English as it’s not their native language.
The Deaf have a hard enough time living in the hearing world as it is. I don’t see why hearing people need to rag on about a harmless accommodation to help them get on better. How is it hurting you?
