White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said Sunday that the country is “not going to control the pandemic” — noting it is contagious like the flu and must be managed with therapeutics and vaccines.
“We’re not going to control the pandemic. We are going to control the fact that we get vaccines, therapeutics and other mitigation efforts,” Meadows said during a contentious interview with Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“Why aren’t we going to get to control the pandemic?” Tapper asked.
“Because it is a contagious virus just like the flu,” Meadows responded, as the two went back and forth about President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence continuing to campaign after five members of Pence’s staff testing positive.
“Let me just say this is what we need to do is make sure that we have the proper mitigation factors — whether it’s therapies or vaccines or treatments — to make sure that people don’t die from this,” he said.
Meadows then went on to suggest that former Vice President Joe Biden wants to quarantine the country.
Tapper said, “nobody is saying that.”
“They are. Joe Biden is saying that. He says, lock everybody down, we’re going to have a dark winter,” Meadows said.
But Tapper countered that’s what health officials are warning will happen this winter as the number of cases surged in the Midwest.
Democrats quickly ripped Meadow’s comment Sunday.
Former Vice President Joe Biden, who has made the Trump administration’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic a main thrust of his campaign, said he was “stunned.”
“This wasn’t a slip by Meadows,” Biden said in a statement.

The point is that Meadows didn’t need to say that at all. I don’t think it’s lying to emphasize “safety” and “reopen carefully”—those are appealing words.
I agree that it is almost as stupid as Biden’s oil comment. Maybe more stupid.
The pandemic is people’s #1 concern. Our kids are still not back in in-person school, no dances, no concerts, sports is ruined, we can’t travel, our lives are still locked down in so many areas and states.
Being so blase and defeatest about it as Meadows did is no good. Kayleigh McVeigh would not have made that mistake.

Don’t be a dope, viruses are cured every day with science. Small pox was and I say WAS a more infectious and much more deadly virus and it was exterminated by humans via a vaccine. There exists only two samples of the smallpox virus in the whole world one is in the USA biolab the Russians have the other one. Vacines work period, humans have cured polio, smallpox,mumps,measles, rubella, yellow fever, dengae the list of virus cured by proper vaccinations is long. SARS COVID II is not even in the influenza family making a comparison is foolish scientifically. There are already vaccines for COVID II the results will be out this November with full titer testing and moving into human challenge testing trials just like every other vaccine approved. Antivaxers are some kind of antiscientific conspiracy nutjobs. Vaccines literally have saved billions of human lives to deny that fact is just evil. Smallpox was a scourge on humanity and science exterminated it by the 1990s with yup a vaccine.
We’ll see. The regular flu vaccine is only 30% or so successful sometimes.
