I agree, but that is only part of the problem; many Americans today (especially young ones) don’t see any way to get ahead, and I lay the blame for that squarely on “globalization”. I’ve watched Asians replace Americans in the financial sector at an alarming rate (just as they did in tech), and few sectors are immune from that dynamic. Wage suppression is very real, and companies would rather deal with indentured coolies than Americans with their expectations of evenings and weekends off, vacations, etc.; this drives naïve people to look for a government solution (when in fact the government had a hand in creating the mess with the open borders and visa program).
