THE US has nearly doubled its number of spy plane assignments to China since 2009, a Chinese research organisation has revealed.
The Chinese think tank said the US has also incremented its naval ship presence in China by more than 60 percent since 2009, according to Newsweek. The US Air Force, Navy and Army currently execute three to five reconnaissance flights a day.
The South China Sea Strategic Situation Probing Initiative (SCSPI) has found that the total of reconnaissance flights has reached more than 1,500 a year.
The think tank was founded in April 2019 and analyses air and maritime movements using open-source commercial data.
A spokesman told Newsweek that the US surveillance in the Yellow Sea, and the East and South China Seas, has been steadily rising since Barack Obamas presidency.
They also observed "an abnormal increase in frequency" in recent years.
Speaking to Newsweek, the spokesman said: "According to our observations, since 2009, the US military has significantly enhanced the frequency of activities in the region by boosting the presence of surface vessels by more than 60 percent, reaching about 1,000 ship-days a year.
"In the air, it sends on average three to five warplanes to the South China Sea per day, most of them being reconnaissance aircraft, making a total of more than 1,500 sorties a year, almost twice as many as in 2009."
In its latest observation, SCSPI said US spy planes flew at least 60 sorties near China last month.
The move was labelled a "close-in reconnaissance" of Beijing's activities.

Good. It doesn’t alarm me.
I see no PANIC. Our military is calmly handling this situation over multiple years. A panic is something occurs when someone yells “movie” in a crowded fire station.
Or doughnuts in a crowded police station!
Sounds like Pacific command is interested in watching the Chicoms activities more than usual. Alarming, I wouldn’t think so. Now if you see carrier battle groups on the move to the South China Sea area and air force planes being transferred to Pacific bases, then you might have some concern.
PANIC! Since 2009? BFD.
Or “BIDEN” in a crowded Amtrak station.....
Whoever was the puppeteer for Beeker must have gotten carpal tunnel...
Xi has promised to invade Taiwan. We have lost our deterrence. That leads to war. The surveillance planes at least we won’t be taken by surprise. Articles published by the PLA promise a decapitation strike before hand. That’s our navy they are talking about.
Now, all the cHinamen in 'Murica. That's alarming and I wish we could get'em outta here.
Hey chicoms, shut up and whittle out some more chopsticks and soup spoons !!!
It would be alarming if we were NOT watching the Chicoms closely. After all, they have been building dozens of islands to (illegally, under international law) in an effort to expand their territory, they have purposely sent a virus out into the world that has killed hundreds of thousands and disrupted every economy on the planet, they’ve stolen intellectual property and engaged in monopolistic practices for decades to screw everyone else on the planet and, well, they damned Communists.
You HAVE to watch them - and them knowing it, and knowing that we have not just the equipment and training, but the WILL to confront them with force if necessary - that helps to keep the peace. Communists are evil, but they are not stupid.
Doubled since 2009. Are increases that happen over a decade a spike?
