Are you sure that happened in California? It wouldn’t surprise me but I don’t recall news stories about that.

It did happen in California but the death rate was WAY lower because most Californians get enough "natural" Vitamin D from Sun exposure even in winter (about 45% of the state is south of the 37° North latitude).
