Black turnout percentage was higher than White turnout percentage in 2012. Clearly Blacks are not being prevented from voting.

Why can't they vote? Who is stopping them?

No I.D. Well, go get one.

I don't have a car. You had four years to bum a ride to get an I.D. You're also planning to use this same excuse four years from now, aren't you?

I'm a convicted felon. In that case, TS.

I don't feel like voting. They all suck. But that's not physically stopping you from voting. Did we change the subject of the article at some point?

There's no one to vote for that looks like me. Man, now, if I said that I can certainly imagine what the author would say about me. But anyway, if you refuse to vote why should anyone you'd elect run for office?

This whole article talks about stuff that happened 50+ years ago and acts like nothing has changed. I'm sorry but no that's BS. I've spent my entire life in the deep South and there's always been black people voting whenever I've gone. And not once has anyone tried to push them out of the polling place with dogs and fire hoses. Anyone who's not voting now has stopped themselves from voting.

And then people like this author come along and treat them like children who can't possibly do for themselves and isn't it just awful what happened to those three young men back in 1964? THAT WAS 56 YEARS AGO! How is that preventing anyone from voting now? It should make people even more determined to vote!

Some people don't really want to vote, they just want to whine and make excuses.

TIM SULLIVAN has no facts and a lot of implied lies in this article.

You're correct about that card.
Meridian is getting worse and more worse as the years go by.
Just drive through town and look at all the abandoned buildings.
Tuscaloosa is growing to the northeast, even after getting wiped out by a major tornado a few years back.
Laurel and Hattiesburg to the south are growing, but not Meridian.

Meridian taxes every good opportunity out of businesses that try to come here.
I shop in Philadelphia MS every chance I get now because of the lack of customer service in Meridian.
But what can you expect when Negroes (Black is a color, and not a race) take over the City government ?

By at least one measure, it’s harder to vote in Mississippi than any other state. And despite Mississippi having the largest percentage of Black people of any state in the nation, a Jim Crow-era election law has ensured a Black person hasn’t been elected to statewide office in 130 years. After years of being shut out of state races, Democrats hope mobilizing Black voters and recruiting Black candidates can eventually give them a path back to relevance in the reddest of red states.

Does this reporter not know that the Jim Crow-era was the Democrat era? The Democrats were relevant in Mississippi and the South by repressing Republicans and blacks in particular. Prior to that, blacks and the non-racist whites (of which there were many even during the time of the Civil War) which were a majority and voted in Republican governments in the South. The KKK and other Dem organizations helped put a stop to that restore Democrat relevance and dominance.

Then black folks find it harder to buy booze or an airplane ticket too?

To say so is racist.

Just an aside: Did you know that Condoleeza Rice’s parents were/are registered Republicans? They registered as Republicans because back in the day, after Blacks had gained the right to register, the Democrats wouldn’t register them. I’m sure that guided Rice’s own politics. She is very quiet these days, but I appreciated her being in politics decade ago.
