U.S. retailers secure stores as worries about election unrest mount

This time last year, shoppers on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile were waiting for Louis Vuitton to debut its whimsical holiday window decorations. Now those same windows are hidden behind a wall of wood panels painted bright orange.

While still open for shoppers, stores like Gucci and Nordstrom are also boarded up after looters targeted the city's famed retail district in the spring and summer, when protests gripped more than 100 U.S. cities.

As security experts warn that the U.S. presidential election could spark renewed civil unrest, those stores remain clad in plywood as retailers seek to keep property and employees safe in the event street violence flares anew.

Aon Plc, the world's largest insurance broker, told Reuters the majority of retailer clients it surveyed are considering boarding up stores because they are worried about looting around the election. Aon executive MaryAnne Burke said about 70% of these retailer clients did so during protests in May and June.

More than two dozen security consultants, insurers, contractors and store employees told Reuters that companies are installing reinforced glass, hiring security guards or retaining on-call teams that barricade and board up buildings.

Retailers are on edge after raiders earlier this year smashed windows, stole merchandise and, at times, set stores ablaze in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Portland and other U.S. cities - often under the cover of peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstrations that were rekindled by the May 25 police killing of George Floyd, a Black man.

Foot Locker in its quarterly report on Aug. 21, said it racked up $18 million in costs from "recent social unrest." Looters target sneaker sellers like Foot Locker because their products are easy to carry away and turn into cash.

“Companies operating in the United States should anticipate the risk of social unrest and political violence.”

So they’re worried about Democrats rioting, looting, burning? Given the events of the last several months, I can’t say I blame them.

If we did away with tax deductibility for shrinkage losses retailers might grow a pair.

Doubtful. Only people who read conservative news really know any of the details. Those on the left who have heard about it all believe it’s just Russian disinformation and/or a desperate smear job by Trump.

If it catches up to Joe after (and if) he wins the election - it isn’t really a problem for the left. Worst case, he resigns and we’re left with President Harris.

So “peaceful” that they have to board up their shops and hire security guards.

?? Catches up to him after he wins the election? If Biden wins the election there won’t be any law and order. Who would make him resign? The FBI? The DOJ?

I saw a lot of live feeds from those events over the summer. Most of the people were just kids (the under 25 crowd) looking for something to do during the lockdown. No posters, no chants. Just walking around on a warm summer evening with a bunch of other people for fun. Sure, there was the occasional guy with a bullhorn trying to get people riled up, and they’d join some sort of chant, but then it stopped when he stopped.

The weather will not be as cooperative in November. These folks will stay in moms basement playing video games. i.e. the crowds will be significantly smaller and made up more of the hard core folks. That’s actually good for our side.

As long as Reuters and AP insist on calling looters “raiders” and riots “unrest” the beatdowns will continue.

In the past I could laugh it off, but I’m seeing the fruits of this indoctrination technique and it ain’t funny.

Our small rural county in Texas are making plans to protect itself.

First on the agenda when mass exodus from the liberal enclaves is to barricade all roads into the County. Removable barricades will be manned by Citizens. Roads have been divided up and list is underway.

Secondly, Citizen militia under the eye of the County Sheriff.

Thirdly, protect it

If I were a store owner I’d be stockpiling some real slippery liquid to pour on the sidewalk in front of my place. Either that or some liquid rubber that stays sticky. Think industrial flypaper.

Trump will win alright, but not by a landslide. California + Washington + Oregon + Hawaii + New York alone gives Biden 107 votes, and that’s not counting all those small Northeastern states and almost-swing states like Nevada.

It will be far worse, if the Democrats win the election.

The 2020 election question: Are you ready for $6 a gallon gas?

[Short excerpt:]
"Oil billionaire Harold Hamm discusses the presidential election's impact on the energy sector and the state of the U.S. economy."
[...]
"We achieved true energy freedom. One of the hugely important, but underappreciated results of the American Energy Renaissance is that peace is breaking out all over the Middle East. There’s a new order in play. Yet we have a political party and candidate who wants to end the miracle and replace it with the utopian notion of a carbonless world. There’s no such thing. Nor will there every be.

Former Vice President Joe Biden and the Democrats want to depress or even destroy one of America’s most critical industries."

At least 38 of the 50 states. That is enough to make it a landslide.

How do you get 38 states going for Trump? Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii, New York, Illinois, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, and Maryland gives us 15 guaranteed states for Biden. 16 if you count DC. Virginia, Nevada, Colorado, and New Mexico are also leaning towards Biden at the moment. More to the point, the blue states are more populous and therefore have more Electoral Votes than red states. Looking at the states I mentioned above, that gives Biden 190 sure Electoral Votes. Once Virginia, Nevada, Colorado, and New Mexico are included Biden's total rises to 223. Not enough to win, but neither side is cruising for a landslide this year.
