SSC announced a customer-owned Tuatara set a new production-vehicle land-speed record of 316.11 mph.
The run took place on Oct. 10 on a seven-mile stretch of State Route 160 in Nevada and required a two-way average with both runs within an hour of each other to account for wind and gradients; a public road; street tires; street fuel; and satellite tracking.
The car was stock...with a four-point seating harness and no roll cage...the team overfilled the Cup 2 tires with nitrogen...the active rear wing was locked in top-speed mode so it couldn't retract or angle for braking if anything were to go wrong. It was set to Track mode, which enabled a lower ride height...the car didn't scrape the road during the attempt.
Webb set three other records on Oct. 10: fastest flying mile on a public road at 313.12 mph, fastest flying kilometer on a public road at 321.35 mph, and highest speed achieved on a public road at 331.15 mph.
Only 100 examples of the Tuatara will be built at the automaker's facility in Richland, Washington, and each one starts from $1.9 million. The hypercar is powered by an SSC-developed 5.9-liter twin-turbo V-8 that produces 1,350 horsepower on 91 octane and 1,750 hp on E85. The engine spins to 8,800 rpm and sends power to the rear wheels via a 7-speed automated manual transmission that can shift in less than 100 milliseconds. The transmission is built by Italy's CIMA. The Tuatara's dry weight is only 2,750 pounds.
...the Tuatara has a coefficient of drag rating of 0.279, which is among the lowest of any high-performance car in production. The core of the hypercar is a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis and it also has a carbon-fiber body, both of which SSC constructs in-house.

One of my uncles was the mechanical engineer that had the patent for the gas pump proportioning valve in the pump that ratioed the storage tank 87 and 105 octane to give the midgrades. Cool gas pumps... Single hose nozzle and the grade selected by a rotary dial on the pump face.
My old 1967 427 Corvette felt like that was next as I passed 135 mph. That nose of the car getting in the way of your view down the road was the secondary warning.
“I wonder if they give tours.”
Sure, Jerod Shelby would be happy to give you a tour with a $500,000 deposit.
P.S. If you’re serious about a purchase I can PM you Jerod’s cell number.
LOL, if they can catch you !
“Crap Ive had Corvettes that run 175 on street gas. In traffic.”
People don’t believe me when I tell them the speed my ‘59 vette would do. Speedometer read up to 165. With a 302 Z-28, a Rochester Quadrajet with Headman headers, I pushed the needle off the gauge.
Wish I never sold that one.
LOL. Can I bring Mrs. POF?
Ping
yeah, saw it on the Drive, at 331mph the driver said it was still pulling...
Wow...I don’t remember that one.
Richland is in the Seattle area like Boston is in the NYC area. (both about 200 miles)
