I have old high school friend (Democrat, Obama supporter,
active in Dem politics) who just got his HAM license.
Apparently many of the Left are getting these licenses
for some reason. Maybe they think it's some sort of way
to organize covertly using radio while avoiding
cell phones and the internet?

As I pointed out in post 22 above, you have to pass a pretty challenging FCC technical exam to get one of these licenses. I suspect the vast majority of these Swampers are too stupid to do so and/or too lazy to study for the test.

Exactly HOW they are getting these needs to be looked into.

Yeah, maybe so. With my background I could pass the ham operator’s test without studying but, why bother? What would I do with a ham radio in metropolitan Boston? Unless, as you note, it’s to communicate without leaving an email/test/phone trail for the NSA.
