Conroe couple fends off bear at Colorado cabin
The Courier ^ | 18 August, 2020 | Sondra Hernandez

In the 23 years Bill and Stephanie Williams have owned a cabin in Creede, Colorado they never had any problems with animals on their property.

But that all changed on the night of July 23 after an encounter with a 250-pound black bear that crashed into the Conroe couple’s cabin.

Bill Williams was able to bring down the bear with a rifle but it was a harrowing night they won’t soon forget.

The Williams have lived in Conroe for 27 years. Stephanie Williams is a watercolor artist and in the 1990s she met fellow watercolor artist Stephen Quiller who was from Creede, Colorado.

She did some workshops with Quiller in Creede and the Williams fell in love with the area.

“Ninety six percent of this county is national forest land,” said Williams. “In the 23 years we have had this cabin, we have never had any problems with animals. Although, we have seen signs of them passing through our property.”

He said the first time they saw the bear was on the night of July 23, he’d been nosing around the trash can outside the cabin. As a precaution, Williams put his Uberti 1866 Yellowboy carbine rifle by the bed.

Then at 3 a.m. they were awakened by a thundering crash as the bear came through one of the cabin windows.

“It sounded like an explosion when he slammed the window open,” said Williams. “I grabbed the Yellowboy and walked to the opening from the bedroom to the living room. We don’t have a door to separate the rooms. With the front porch light coming through the windows, I could see the bear on the couch, just 42 inches from me.

He was on the couch? They should have offered him tea and crumpets.

I don’t like bears. I saw some gigantic black bear in the back yard a couple of weeks ago. I called the association who runs this place and they informed me that the bears are allowed to go wherever they want to go. “And we’re not allowed to shoot them, of course,” I said. “That’s right.”

I should have told them to make the bears pay the $1000 a year “association fee.”

It is because of Disneyfication and Gaia worshipers.

Allowing large, dangerous animals to wander through suburban/urban areas is idiotic.

It is another reason to go armed.

We have a black bear in the news now because it is traveling through a heavily-populated area in northeastern NJ now (including my town); we’ve never had one here before, and I can’t imagine how it got here. We’re sandwiched between Newark and Jersey City, several miles from where any nears live; honestly, it must have crossed many highways and bridges to get here.

Apparently people are reporting its location but gubmint isn’t doing anything about it; they should tranquilize it and take it out west before it tells other bears how delicious our food is...or how delicious we are. I honestly believe they won’t take any action if it doesn’t threaten anyone, but in the meantime nobody here has “bear-proofed” anything - they are NEVER seen here (even deer are just starting to return after 50 years, but they can thrive in the open Meadowlands).

“That rifle saved our lives,” said Stephanie. “I blow it a kiss goodnight every night before bed.

I went looking to see if the barrel length of the rifle he used was mentioned in the article and found this gem.

Amen sister.

Looks to be 19 inches.

For the price of a Yellow Boy carbine...four months ago, he could have had two AR15 type carbines, in various calibers...

Now, I suspect he is glad to have the rifle. Everything is flying off the shelves.

To each, his own. It worked well for him.

They’ll certainly bring “vehicular Darwinism” to our roads; deer already do that in much of the state.

That was the second thing I looked up...the retail price for that gun.

I'll wager he's had that thing for a long while and was used to handling it...which makes all the difference when the chips are down.
