Taiwan Wants Strong U.S. Defense to Make Invasion 'Painful' As China Conflict Fears Grow

aiwan has long looked to the United States for protection from the massive forces of the Chinese mainland 100 miles to the west. Now Taipei is calling for robust defense ties with Washington amid growing concerns of potential conflict as Beijing's warplanes conduct regular fly-by's, threatening reunification by force.

Aircraft of the People's Liberation Army continued to enter Taiwan's declared air defense identification throughout the weekend, even as the self-ruling island celebrated "National Day"—an occasion commemorating the end of the Qing Dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China, which Taiwan officially calls itself.

But as the rival People's Republic of China made its presence known, Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen delivered a military message as well.

"As commander-in-chief," Tsai said, "I always have the future of our military and our military of the future in my heart."

do Taiwan’s own people love their democracy and de facto independence enough to do what it takes?

I ask the same question of our domestic snow flakes.

Well lets face it, what choice did Austria have when it was told by Hitler to join or else. Had they refused Hitler would have made a short story out of it.

I am not saying we cut them off, just make sure WE are noy paying for it.

Some countries have practically no military at all, because they rely on the USA for their defense.

If they want US protection the petition the US government to become a territory of the US. Otherwise no. We can sell arms, joint training ... but not fight your wars. I say that with respect for Taiwan.

Lease Taiwan two Ohio Class subs, fully loaded. I think that will stop the madness.

Taiwan has remained independent for seventy years because it is backed by the U.S. Maybe we could get Japan and Australia and New Zealand more involved.

That is a more likely scenario instead of counting on the U.S. The Taiwanese people are very pro-Japan, and there is already some cooperation between the nations for trade and military drills. It would benefit Taiwan to have the Japanese military defend Taiwan.

China will not invade until a Democrat is in office.

This whole COVID-19 spreading by China was part of a plan to weaken the U.S.A. prior to an October invasion of Taiwan. Unless Biden wins in November, very unlikely they will invade by end of year. The U.S.A. is more resilient than China assumed. However, if Biden wins and our economy collapses post-inauguration, then the invasion of Taiwan is on.

If you follow history china actually belongs to Taiwan.

Yeah, well, if you follow history the US belongs to England. Or the Pequots and Mohicans and Iroquois. Or maybe the Clovis people. Or red headed people well over 6 feet tall and with elongated skulls...

Nah, territory belongs to whomever is willing to take it by force and keep it by force. That is the true history of mankind.

The challenge is to enlist the support of the Quadrilateral Dialog in seeing the defense of Taiwan as being in their own security interests. They all know now that China is the common enemy of all of us. For political reasons, the continued independence of Taiwan is of immense importance to the free world.

For much of its history, China had little interest in Taiwan one way or the other. It was just this island far off the coast, different people, nothing much to be gained there. Only after the nationalists retreated from the mainland aNd set up a government in exile did China suddenly have territorial designs.

I think china wants Taiwan’s money more than anything

Communism has an inferiority complex. Taiwan is a threat to the CCP because they are free and prosperous. You have ethnic Chinese citizens who live in a country where they enjoy freedom and a high quality of life in comparison to China.

That is the real threat of Taiwan.

There is one answer and I think if Trump wins a second term we will see a new defense alliance emerge to contain China. China has overplayed their hand since the virus struck and the biggest threat to them now is Donald J. Trump. Why? Because Trump thinks outside the box.

Watch and see.....

Taiwan is a threat to the CCP because they are free and prosperous.

Another factor to consider: Taiwan is the legitimate government of all China. Mao's armies chased Chang Kai-Shek's army away, but never destroyed them. They continued in Taiwan. China's CCP knows it is the worst problem in the world, and they aren't even the real government of China.

If it is anything like Korea, the waves of Chinese coming in will be that they have too many male mouths to feed and need to get rid of them.
First wave, with rifles.
Second wave with more rifles.
Third wave with rocks and sticks. picking up rifles from the first two waves, now dead.
Forth wave, unarmed, picking up what they can with to fight.
My brother-in-law was there. he saw it.
