I don’t buy the premise that Columbus inflicted violence on the locals. He arrived in three small ships, crew size about 40 each. Had he imposed violence on the locals he would have ended up like Custer.
The history has been rewritten concerning the Spanish settlement of the Americas; their small numbers were usually augmented by competing tribes against the dominant ones.
Even here in the northeast Samuel de Champlain stepped into the middle of conflicts between Hurons, Iroquois, etc.; he (and France) supported one group, and England supported the other, in struggles that had gone on long before Europeans arrived.
