I believe you are correct, the pistol is in recoil with the muzzle raised slightly from the line of fire and the slide a little more than halfway returned to the battery position. The ejected casing is rotating up and away with the case head toward camera at the lowest point.

That would indicate that the round had struck the victim's right hand between the first and middle fingers on the palm side of his hand and traveled through the left side of his face.

Also believe the victim is stepping back and to the right away from the fence in an attempt to evade the attack.
